Description

Our prestigious client, based in Scotland, is looking for a Senior Design Engineer to join a highly skilled team.

1. As a Senior Design Engineer on our client's Wireless projects, you are responsible for reaching the objectives of the assigned work-packages and projects, with specific responsibility for;

- Delivery to agreed requirements and specification
- Achieving delivery within the required timescales
- Achieving delivery to the client's quality system and it's specific development processes and methodologies

2. The essential duties of a Senior Design Engineer are;

- Assisting pre-sales activities and performing project quotations
- Preparing and presenting technical proposals to customers
- Participating in regular project review meetings and calls
- Realising difficult technical aspects of a project
- Following instructions given by Technical Leaders, Project Managers and Design Centre Managers
- Acting as mentor for Junior Design Engineers and Design Engineers
- Providing monthly activity reports
- Providing any specific project achievement reports required by the management
- Ensuring that the project realisation is within the framework of our client's quality system
- Playing an active role in the development of proprietary our client's technology and IP

Our client is a vendor of wireless communication and associated IP for voice audio and data - especially DECT technology. The work environment is mainly project driven with high variety and relatively short timescale projects. Projects execute with mixed discipline teams and technical staffs are expected to take responsibility for their own timely delivery and quality within this team approach.

However specifically for the opening we have, our client is looking for the following:

1. Design of electronic systems, subsystems and modules.

- Digital designs with microcontrollers, DSP, programmable logic, distributed logic,
- ADC / DAC interfacing
- Analogue preconditioning for speech and audio
- Low noise, high efficiency power supplies
- Battery operation
- Coexistence with RF modules or subsystems

2. Schematic capture (preferred Orcad and Allegro design capture)
3. Generation of layout instructions covering critical placement, routing, ground and power plane placement generation of Faraday shield cans
4. Critical part BOM generation for early acquisition for prototyping
5. Prototype evaluation, including acquisition of specific test equipment if necessary
6. Pre-approval testing
7. Support of designs into production, including if necessary generation of proprietary test sequences or even test equipment.

The position available does not necessarily require any RF design capability, but since most of our designs have an embedded short range radio, RF awareness is necessary.

A key element of our portfolio is wireless speech and audio. Candidates should be able to design for clean audio in the presence of potential RF interferers and the bursty power supply loads of RF transmitters.

For wireless designs, the need for battery operation must be catered for. Candidates should be conversant with switching and linear power design, including dynamic configuration for low load and standby operation.

Designs may require small form factors and high component density to meet customer requirements. Our client will often be challenged to achieve fast design turnaround for customers and engineers must know when to optimise and when to commit designs and how to negotiate and communicate such decision making.

The successful candidate will have good team communication skills, be able to influence and mentor more junior engineers and communicate with management from our client and from their customers.

Designs must be supported after development, and a successful candidate should have good problem analysis skills and be able to propose effective modifications.

Layout is normally performed outside the Edinburgh department apart from simple prototypes. Any manufacturing is through contract manufacturers or customer production sites.

As well as participating in customer directed project work, candidates may be working on internal IP development projects, specifically Radio and Audio hardware modules and evaluation systems and reference designs.

Main tools used within the company board level design (these may change to match customer requirements on a per project basis, so candidates would be expected to be able to pick up new tools quickly)

- Orcad PCB design (including Orcad CIS)
- Allegro Design Authoring (Including Allegro Design Entry - formerly Concept and Allegro Layout)
- Spice
- Cadence Incisive (formerly NC-SIM)
- Matlab
- Excel
- Chekmate (our client's target test scripting tool)
- Software environments for target test development including IAR, Keil and GCC / Eclipse with JTAG debuggers
- Xilinx ISE / Vivado, Altera Quartus, Actel Libero
- Labview
