Description

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Defines architecture for digital control systems, including selection and application of microcontrollers (C51, X86, ARM), FPGA (Altera, Xilinx), A/D converters, and solid state memory. Designs, qualifies, and releases to production new and/or enhanced hardware to implement digital architecture. May complete field-testing for validation of designs.
Completes low noise analog designs, including integrated power supplies. Selects and applies sensors, including photodiodes, radiation detectors, proximity, rotational encoders, and reflective and transmissive optical sensors.
Integrates computer hardware/software, motion control, data acquisition, and instrumentation components for design development. Debugs system level problems, and demonstrates initiative to resolve complex production and field problems.
Completes the design of PCBA, including schematic capture, device selection, PCBA layout, and assembly documentation. Completes PCBA design verification including bring-up, troubleshooting, debug, and updates. Completes design documentation, including electrical schematics, PCBA mask layers, Bills of Material, assembly instructions, and specification control drawings.
Writes, debugs, and documents embedded C code to deliver board support packages and other embedded software functions.
Uses digital communication interfaces such as CAN, RS-232, USB, and Ethernet to provide system control and diagnostics. Applies Controller Area Network (CAN) technology, including industrial automation protocols such as DeviceNet, Smart Distributed System (SDS) and CANopen.
Works with Manufacturing staff to define PCBA and electronics test method selection and tooling development for production. Completes documentation to specify manufacturing processes. May design test fixtures for PCBA and electrical assembly testing during production.
Designs and tests for safety (UL, FDA) and EMI compliance (CE, FCC) requirements.
Assesses internal and external customer requirements for end user applications. Translates requirements to specifications and the hardware design.
Works closely with technology partners to assess partner offerings relative to the implementation of digital control architecture. Works closely with partners to qualify components and implement into production.
Regularly writes timely and concise technical reports understandable by both technical and non-technical readers.
Works with suppliers and cross-functional development team to reduce time to market, product cost and procurement lead-time while meeting design objectives.
Provide sustaining engineering support for released products, including changes for improved manufacturability, reduced cost, increased reliability, and/or improved performance. Assists in the preparation and incorporation of ECO's.
Provide regular status reports, written and/or verbal, to cross-functional project team members.

Job Requirements:
Demonstrated successful electrical design of digital control systems and their components.
Experience with low noise analog design including EMI architecture definition, analog circuitry characterization, and troubleshooting.
At least 5 years product design experience of moderately complex electronics, including circuit design, schematic capture, logic design, layout PCB validation, characterization, and ramp to production.
Programming experience with C and HDL (VHDL, Verilog as HDL examples).
Experience with electrical engineering CAD tools for schematic capture, simulation, and layout (Orcad, Spice, PADS, and similar design tools).
Familiar with best practices for DFT, DFM, and DFS.
Demonstrated track record of meeting cost, schedule and performance goals.
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to communicate with electrical and mechanical engineers, production planners, buyers, suppliers, production technicians, manufacturing engineers, field application engineers, and customers.
Broad experience with office automation products (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.)
BSEE, BSCE, or equivalent 4-year degree.

DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS:
Hands-on experience with automated machinery, X-ray systems, semiconductor capital equipment, medical instrumentation, or laboratory capital equipment a plus
Demonstrated experience with DFT, including writing test system software, test procedures, and designing and building test fixtures. Familiarity with Labview tools and Python programming languages a plus.
Familiar with Linux operating system.
Experience in applying Controller Area Network (CAN) technology and similar digital communication interfaces.
Experience with improving product manufacturability, including managing component lifecycles, designing for manufacturability, and improving product yield and throughput.
Experience in project management to meet cost and schedule commitments a plus
Familiarity with Agile configuration management software a plus.
