What is an IT technical support apprenticeship?

As IT technical support you will be working with computers and supporting the users of computers. If you have an interest in computers, enjoy working with people and solving problems this is the job for you. As IT technical support you will help to solve IT software problems and will also get involved in the maintenance and repair of the companies hardware and equipment.

IT technical support staff will be familiar with many different operating systems and will have a general interest and knowledge in all new technologies. You will have the ability to explain problems to the IT user and work with people who have a limited IT knowledge to assist them in understanding the problem and resolution.

What is the work like?

As IT technical support you may be required to work in a variety of different ways including; on site where you will be working within the business, directly with staff members. You could also be working remotely, where you could be staffing an IT help desk, answering calls and emails. This would require you to resolve problems by guiding clients through programmes or you may be required to access their computers remotely and resolve the problem for them. You could be working as part of a team within a company, or may be providing support to external business clients.

Responsibilities may vary depending on the employer but duties usually include:

• Work with clients to understand details of faults
• Resolving faults and explaining to the client the work you have carried out
• Fixing and maintaining equipment, such as printers, laptops, scanners and PC's
• Assisting with system upgrades and setting up new devices
• Recording problems within CRM systems so that task histories can be reviewed
• Provide excellent customer service
• Identify the need for system and equipment updates

How will I learn on an IT technical support apprenticeship?

This programme usually takes one year to gain an Advanced Apprenticeship at Level 3, this is equivalent to two A levels. To do this you will divide your time between your place of work and the IT Academy. The time you spend at work will be where you get to learn practical skills from seeing the real working environment. You will shadow qualified members of staff so that you are able to learn first-hand how to go about the job. You will also get the opportunity to assist in the activities. Once you pass your assessments and CompTIA and Microsoft certification exams and progress through your course you will be able to start completing tasks on your own. To ensure you are competent in completing tasks on your own a Remit assessor will visit you periodically at your work place to complete reviews and assessment testing with you. As well as your Remit assessor you will also see a Remit tutor at the
Remit IT Academy. Your tutor is the person responsible for teaching you the vital elements of the qualification that you can then take into your work placement and use in a practical way.

What skills are required for me to gain this apprenticeship?

As technical support you will need to demonstrate:

• Good IT skills
• Strong organisational skills
• Good written and verbal communication and understanding of customer service
• A good work ethic with a determination to succeed
• Ability to work within a team or covering your own caseload of work

Salary:
During your apprenticeship, the employer you are working for will pay you a salary. This will be a minimum of £2.68 an hour. Some employers pay more than this and some offer other benefits and incentives.
