VAT Manager

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Tax your key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing actionable Indirect Tax insights and advice to both operational business units and central Corporate functions;
  • Taking ownership for VAT issues across core UK B2C businesses both mitigating risk and delivering opportunities;
  • Acting as the de facto lead on VAT matters with HMRC;
  • Reviewing Indirect Tax outputs prepared by the Tax team in Scotland;
  • Providing technical support to other members of the VAT team and fulfilling a leadership role within the Tax team more generally;
  • Reviewing legal contracts and advising on the most efficient means of structuring arrangements;
  • Providing the Indirect tax lead on M&A transactions in respect of the UK and all other territories;
  • Raising awareness of Indirect Tax across the business particularly amongst legal and marketing teams
  • Ensuring compliance with the group's SAO and risk control environment;
  • Leading other members of the Indirect Tax team on business transformation projects;
  • Formulating and executing the Group's Indirect Tax strategy.

Candidate Specification

  • Strong technical ability preferably CTA qualified and with a good grounding from a Big 4 accounting or Magic Circle law firm;
  • Strong and confident verbal and written communication skills, able to explain complex tax issues to non-finance individuals;
  • Excellent time-management skills and reliability under pressure;
  • A team player wanting to play an active role in driving forward the objectives of the wider tax team;
  • Eagerness to take ownership and responsibility for casework under minimal supervision;
  • Commitment to maintaining robust controls and promoting compliance with controls across the business in support of our SAO obligations;
  • Good judgement and commitment to an open and transparent way of working;
  • Strong behaviours evidenced in how results are delivered, consistent with  core values: doing the right thing, giving clear direction, change & improvement, empowerment, collaboration &   teamwork.
  • Ideally a reasonable understanding of management and statutory accounting.
