Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR) is an award-winning magazine and website that covers cross-sector solutions to global problems. SSIR is written for and by social change leaders in the nonprofit, business, and government sectors who view collaboration as key to solving environmental, social, and economic justice issues. SSIR bridges academic theory and practice with ideas about achieving social change. The publication covers a wide range of subjects, from microfinance and green businesses to social networks and human rights. Its aim is to both inform and inspire.

We are seeking an experienced UI designer to redesign several key elements of our existing (currently desktop-only) website, as well as generate new UI designs optimized for mobile and tablet devices, and in line with best practices for mobile development.
Note: This project is design-only and does not include website development. Top candidates will be asked to respond to a formal request for proposal (RFP).

Responsibilities
  • Work closely and creatively with the SSIR team to understand project goals and priorities
  • Turn creative concepts into elegant, intuitive designs for desktop, tablet, and mobile devices
  • Create wireframes, mockups, and clearly annotated final designs
  • Provide time estimates and meet deadlines
  • Provide regular, detailed status updates


  • Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience in UI design
  • Master of design software and prototyping tools
  • Demonstrated knowledge of UI design for mobile
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical team members
  • Ability to anticipate development/coding limitations and needs re: design implementation

  • San Francisco Bay Area local (but not necessary)
  • Experience developing UI for publications
  • Experience collaborating with a third-party developer
  • Familiarity with ExpressionEngine CMS
