Description

Our client is a small but highly effective research organisation with a strong reputation. One of their current projects involves the organisation of large volumes of data to aid in environmental reporting and analysis. They require a Systems Engineer to create a tool kit that will allow web-based access to the data with the capacity for automated reporting.

The role sits within a funded organisation and it is anticipated that the successful candidate will have exposure to a similar environment, either within government or academia.

This is a rare opportunity within the natural resource sector that will see you working within an enthusiastic and ambitious team towards a set of clearly defined goals.

Duties will include:

  • Lead the development of a natural resource management/environmental assessment tool-kit for high performance data;
  • Participate in setting work plans to progress the data project;
  • Support collaborators in developing and implementing a suite of generic open source software tools;
  • Report on progress, and deliver results in appropriate formats and forums that may include internal reports, published articles, and conference presentations;
  • Provide effective and timely communication of relevant operational issues to the Project Manager and team members on the principle of "no surprises".
  • Maintain an awareness of developments within web service delivery domains that are relevant to this project (eg Web processing services, web coverage services, coordinate reference systems).

Required technical skills

  • Completion of a higher degree in Computer Science or related discipline.
  • Experience with open source applications using Python, GDAL, OGR, and C/C++ on Linux platforms.
  • Earth observation/remote sensing imagery and other types/themes of spatial data including raster and vector formats.
  • The high performance and optimization of software systems at both system and application levels.
  • Analysing, summarising, and serving information via web services using state of the art and open-source applications in a high-performance computing environment.

Personal attributes:

  • The ability to lead and shape a research project, particularly in a multi-organisational context
  • Effective written and oral communication skills and the ability to work with a range of stakeholders
  • Well-developed organisational skills with demonstrated ability to effectively plan, organise and prioritise work tasks
  • Capable and enthusiastic, and willing to adopt a very collaborative work style.

This role would be ideal for an Engineer who has worked within a research organisation in the past and would like to develop further in this area, specifically in relation to natural resource data reporting and analysis.

Although our client is a small organisation, they are at the forefront of user driven research in their field. They have robust funding agreements through a range of government and commercial partnerships and are able to offer this non-ongoing contract through to December 2016.
