Description

One of our prestigious clients is currently seeking a SoC Development Technical Lead to join their global organisation.

Role:
Reporting to the Global Chief Engineer, Advanced Engineering, responsible to create the development environment, define and document the supporting processes, and seed the required competencies into the global R&D organisation so as to enable our design and development engineers to make effective use of the latest System on Chip (SoC) technologies in development of our next generation products.

Job Responsibilities:
-First responsibility will be to lead the evaluation of latest generation System on Chip technologies and supporting development environments from each of the key players, working closely with system engineering to identify functionality and performance requirements, hence identify the solution which offers best fit to our needs.
-To identify any required investments, secure and put in place the required tools and development environment to support System on Chip development within an IEC61508 context.
-For each of the design, development and test roles within a system on chip development project, define the required competencies, and competence levels which should be demonstrated. Support the inclusion of these competencies within the competency assessment model.
-Conduct the competency assessments on those persons identified as currently involved, or planned to be involved in System on Chip development activities. Develop the gap analysis and create clear development actions for each individual. Consolidate the individual development actions to create an organisational level competency development plan.
-Define and document the process which our engineers are expected to follow when engaged in System on Chip development activities. Roll out the new processes and guide deployment in first development activities.
-To prepare and deliver presentations and hands-on workshop sessions to train engineers in the development methodology, and to build experience and capability in the use of the development environment, working within the defined process, and producing all required outputs to support SIL assessment audits.
-To lead the team in the design of architectures which make optimum use of the available features and functions so as to give best possible performance from the chosen devices.
-Provide coaching and support to the development teams so as to ensure that the necessary design, analysis and test activities are undertaken, checking to ensure correct application of processes, and guiding the correct use of the supporting tools and development environment.
-To act as design authority for all system on chip development activities, to review and sign off on all completed designs, thus providing an important assessment and guarantee of the quality and correctness of the development activities.
-Support review of system on chip development activities by SIL assessor, and to put in place any actions needed to address areas of concern or non-conformance to standard.

Position interfaces with:
R&D Director & Management Team, Marketing, Advanced Engineering Team, Functional Safety Manager, Project Managers, Activity Technical Leads, Design & Test Engineers, External IEC61508 Assessment & Certification bodies

Experience Required:
-Currently working in System on Chip development activities, and having at least five years experience in FPGA and/or SoC focused developments, including use of latest generation Xilinx Zynq 7000 series and/or Altera SoC devices.
-Strong understanding of IEC61508:2010 (or other industry specific functional safety standard derived from IEC61508). Highly familiar with IEC61508:2010 compliant development process for SoC developments, and should have worked on at least one such development having successfully achieved certification to at least SIL2 level, and preferably SIL3.
-Highly familiar with the features and internal structures of latest generation System on Chip devices, and highly competent in the development of efficient architectural design solutions using the Matlab Simulink toolsuite, managing the allocation of functionality between FPGA and processor cores to achieve the optimum design solutions.
-Strong capability in configuration and operation of the on-chip peripheral functions such as A/D converter, high speed communications channels, etc.
-Highly experienced and capable in the use of the development environments & tool flows covering the complete System on Chip design lifecycle from architectural design, software and firmware development pathways, to co-simulation & design verification steps..
-Significant experience and capability in co-simulation of complex solutions to evaluate and validate designs involving concurrent execution of code in both FPGA and CPU elements.
-Good communicator, able to prepare and articulate a clear vision for enhancing capability in development of efficient solutions to complex problems using latest generation System on Chip technologies. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills. Able to influence and negotiate effectively at all levels within the organisation.

PREFERRED ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND
-Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering (Masters Degree a plus).
-Strong knowledge and capability in electronic design, especially in design of solutions to complex real time problems using FPGA or System on Chip technologies. At least five years experience at senior engineer level.
-Knowledge of electrical transmission & distribution industry operating practices, and in particular protective relays applications and their networking within the substation environment would be advantageous.
