Hazardous Installations Directorate HID regulates the UK's major hazard industries - companies whose products are essential to our everyday life, but where failures in safety management and risk control can lead to catastrophic harm to workers and the public at large
  • carry out inspections of major hazard installations with respect to mechanical engineering
  • investigate accidents and incidents
  • support enforcement action, including preparing technical reports and expert evidence in legal proceedings
  • input expert advice to the assessment of safety reports, verifying compliance with the Control of Major Accidents Hazard Regulations and the Health and Safety as WorkAct
  • contribute to the development of technical and operational strategy


You must have:

mechanical engineering degree accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers IMechE, or an equivalent qualification in a closely related subject that could be accredited by IMechE

chartered status with the Engineering Council, along with Corporate membership of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, or the qualifications and experience to apply for Corporate membership and registration; Please provide evidence from IMechE that you satisfy their requirements to gain Chartered status

a good working knowledge of containment integrity management associated with the onshore chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industry sectors

experience in

mechanical Engineering principles e.g. mechanical integrity, safe design and use, risk assessment

vessels, pipe work and other containment e.g. pressure vessels and systems and hazardous substances storage

maintenance strategies and associated techniques, such as condition based monitoring, as well as safe isolation methodologies and Permit to Work systems

inspection and testing plant and equipment where inspection and testing is key to avoiding failure.

mechanical failure- includes mechanisms of mechanical failure, degradation of materials and life extension

a full driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK
