I am currently looking for a Clerk of works/ civil engineer for 6 month contract on switch island link road project.

The Position

My Client is looking for a Clerk of Works to join the Design Site Representation Team on a Switch Island Link Road project in Merseyside.

Working under the direction of the Designers Site Representative, you will be responsible for witnessing the works being carried out, and issuing Non Conformance Records (NCR's) where the works are not in accordance with the design and specification.

The Project

Proposed new £14 million, 4.2 km long, wide single carriageway road, linking the A road to Switch Island junction.

The scheme is predominantly at grade or in shallow cut/embankment, has a roundabout, two signal controlled junctions, a signal controlled crossing, and amendments to the existing signal controlled Switch Island junction.

Two new culverts are required, four drainage balancing ponds, landscape planting, and a new VOSA Site will be provided as part of the works, which have been designed to DMRB standards.

Role

The Clerk of Works will:

* Become familiar with all the relevant drawings and written instructions, checking them, and using them as a reference when inspecting the work.
* Make visual inspections.
* Take measurements and samples on site to make sure that the work and the materials meet the specifications and quality standards.
* Be familiar with legal requirements and checking that the work complies with them.
* Have a working knowledge of health and safety legislation and bring any shortfalls observed to the attention of the person(s) concerned.
* Produce daily records of site activities and record significant events including serious deficiencies in health and safety performance and other issues which may result in additional costs and / or delay to the works.
* Work closely with the Designers Site Rep and the Site Teams to ensure that the works are witnessed and records kept to ensure that they can sign off their contractual obligations.

Qualifications

The Clerk of Works should:

* Be a member of The Institute of Clerks of Works.
* And / or have significant experience in undertaking role of an inspector / Clerk of Works) on similar schemes.

Skills and personal qualities

The Clerk of Works should:

* Have a wide understanding of the construction industry, including knowledge of materials, trades, methods and safety requirements associated with major highway scheme construction.
* Be attentive to detail when checking work and materials.
* Be technically competent.
* Be capable of a high standard of spoken, and written communication skills
* Be able to use Microsoft Office.
* Be vigilant to make sure that the work and materials meet the required standard.
* Be able to establish an appropriate working relationship with the contractor's staff.
persuasive and diplomatic while remaining independent.
* Have good judgement, because they have to decide when to insist on corrections, when to persuade or negotiate, and when to compromise.
* Set an example by acting in a professional manner at all times including wearing personal protective equipment when on a construction site.
* Keep up to date with changes in construction methods, statutory legislation and carry out continued professional development (CPD).

Working hours

The Clerk of Works should:

* Be prepared to work flexibly, generally to a 45 hour week. .
* Occasionally there may be a need to work weekends and nights to accommodate the contractors programme.

Rate: Negotiable on experience
