The Opportunity
We’re looking for a detail oriented, quality obsessed senior test engineer to help advance our automated QA efforts and ensure bug-free releases on our products + service gigs approximately 10-25 hours per week.

The Gig (extended version)

This is where you come in. Identifying imperfections, flaws, shortcomings. Preempting criticism with constructive feedback. Relentlessly playing devil’s advocate while simultaneously having your team’s back. You take it beyond code and care about usefulness, experience and value.Modern Tribe’s quality engineers play a unique role in the business: while you’ll always be a core part of the team, your job is to put yourself in the shoes of an outsider, a user or a client and challenge our team’s perceptions. The last thing a manager ever wants to hear from a test engineer is “there’s nothing wrong with this product” until they can stand behind it in confidence. If you’re finding quirks, bugs or usability failures in anything and everything you evaluate, from your cat’s grocery list to the daily newspaper to this very gig listing… then you’ve piqued our interest. We aren’t just looking for someone who can point out flaws, though — being able to provide meaningful ideas for how those flaws can be rectified is a major piece of the puzzle. As a result, the right candidate for this gig will bring QA automation skills to the table and have ideas for effectively executing on them from day one.
Modern Tribe’s senior software tester is responsible for:
- Writing detailed test scripts and automating our quality assurance process company-wide (by the end of 2015 our goal is to have almost all of our ongoing release QA automated)
- Working with our development, quality assurance and project management teams to bring quality control on our WordPress plugins and service projects through rigorous testing
- Drafting detailed, scalable QA test plan templates to be shared and moulded to meet the needs of each project
- Coordinating with clients and customers to understand how a project/product will serve them, and evaluating it from their perspective
- Working with developers, designers, project managers and support to communicate problems effectively and quickly
- Improving, rather than simply sustaining, Modern Tribe’s company-wide quality control processes
- Self flagellating when a bug slips through your fingers and ships with the finished product (totally kidding about this part)
- A passion for quality (there’s a reason this is #1!)
- An understanding of agile development processes (our QA is not just a matter of planning/executing after development wraps, but rather a continuous process)
- A strong command of how to run effective, scalable automated testing
- A track record of WordPress plugin/theme development with code samples our team review
- A familiarity with GIT or similar quality control tools (an active GitHub page with WordPress-centric code samples is a huge plus)
- Some form of proven, demonstrable quality assurance experience
- 100% comfort when working in a 100% remote/distributed environment (if you haven’t been working remotely for at least a year, this probably isn’t a good fit)
- A strong command of how to use WordPress is a must (familiarity with The Events Calendar or any of its add-ons is an added bonus)
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented and strongly organized, with a methodical approach to all tasks
- A strong communicator with experience working as part of a remote team
- Approaching quality assurance as a career we can help you advance in, not just a pathway to a developer gig
- Comfortable wording defects/quirks in a way that shows you’re working with a development team, not against/in conflict with them
- Able to prioritize own workload and work to exacting deadlines
- Able to maintain strict confidentiality
- Desiring to constantly learn about the industry
- A fluent English speaker with a mastery of written + spoken English
- Fully confident writing detailed, complete bug reports + test plans (examples of either would be a huge bonus)
