Description

Ink developer

Location: Venlo

Duration:

Introduction:
MDT (1-4). Part of our Research & Development organization, the Materials Device Technology Development Center (MDTD) assures the development of competitive products by realizing the involved print (imaging) processes with the right print quality, reliability, time to market and cost structure. MDTD is also responsible for development and engineering of strategic consumables (eg ink) and modules, essential elements in our printing process. This includes design and realization of the process technology.

Project:
New inkjet inks to be developed and industrialized for fit in the print systems.

Position's main tasks:
Main task of the position is to support in the formulation of test inks, either as candidates for testing on the print system or as model samples to improve our understanding of functional relationships. Optimization of existing ink recipes can also be part of the formulation work.

Work will be performed in the ink formulation lab, in very close conjunction with the other ink formulators in the project team. Characterization and off-line testing of the ink are part of the job.

Typical activities of the ink formulator are;
Smart selection of ink components (based on knowledge of material properties) and mixing them to prepare test ink samples.
Tuning of specific ink properties (eg color, visicosity or surface tension) by adjusting the concentration of specific components.
Performing functional tests with the self-prepared ink samples, such as eg the determination ink robustness on paper or ink jettability by applying the ink in an ink jet print head.
Determination of the physical properties of the prepared inks and relating these properties to the functional behavior of the ink. In some cases it may be necessary to set up a simple experimental design for this purpose.

Once the ink development has led to an attractive ink recipe for application in the print system, the focus of the ink formulator may shift more towards ink optimization and engineering. In this case, the formulator will be asked eg to determine the influence of raw material batch variation on ink functionality or to determine the critical dosing limits for the ink components (by activities similar as described above).

Required area of education:
HBO Chemistry of HLO with affinity for materials development

Professional skills:
Specific knowledge and experience with components, commonly used in (inkjet) inks (eg pigments) would but not a very large benefit.

Behavioral skills:
Hands-on, self employed, accurate, analytical

Field of experience:
Experience with formulation of mixtures (in eg painting industry of farmaceuticals) is advantageous, but not a prerequisite.
Experience with working in a multi-disciplinary team is also a pre.
