My client operates across a wide range of industries including automotive, defence, marine and renewable energy. They specialise in the design, development and integration of electromechanical control systems, and mechanical system architectures for vehicles and other applications.

Applications range from high performance super cars and ultra-luxury passenger vehicles to the very latest in electric vehicle technology and government funded research programmes.

Job purpose:

To technically lead Design and project activities within the Mechanical systems department supporting the Engineering function in an exciting and growing working environment
Projects are likely to be vehicle or mechatronics related, however the variety of our work means that you could be working on a mechanical system which requires technical solutions

Key responsibilities:

Technical responsibility for Design within the Mechanical Systems department
Ensure CAE techniques are planned and deployed appropriately to support your project in conjunction with Analysis engineers to ensure the Design requirements are achieved
Responsibility to sign off components design
Coaching and supervision of Graduate to senior engineers
Technical liaison with customers, suppliers and manufacturing
Support the Team Leader, and Chief Engineer in directing the future growth of the department within Automotive Technology
Support the Chief Engineer in recruitment activities
Support the Team Leader and Chief Engineer in writing client quotations
Ensure 3D and 2D CAD component models and systems meet project requirements
Supplier liaison, to enable completion of component designs
Must be able to work within a close knit team taking instruction from nominated design leader
Lead projects; managing the team, budget, and timing, ensure project deliverables are achieved as planned
Write effective and appropriate reports to document your work. Sign off reports by more junior Engineers
Candidates with proven experience of concept design and CAD utilisation will be given preference

Ideal Candidates:
Several years design and management experience in vehicle under body systems, eg Suspension systems, Brakes, Steering, transmission, driveline, and/or hybrid systems, or other complex mechanisms would be an advantage. Otherwise other similar experience would be considered.
Experience with, and/or an understanding of utilising Analysis techniques would be an advantage
Demonstrable ability in conceptual design particularly mechanisms, and or electro - mechanical systems, thorough understanding of geometric tolerancing
Robust understanding of Mechanical engineering principles, and application through use of design calculations
Good understanding of production manufacturing technologies, materials and fastening techniques
Familiar with workshop activities like fabrication, welding, CNC machining
Proficient in key CAD packages, CATIA V5 preferred
Experience gained within a OEM, First tier supplier, or Design consultancy would be an advantage
Capability to manage a team of designers, and coordinate parallel development of complex systems
Ability to coach and supervise junior and senior engineers and to delegate as appropriate
Experience of managing projects through gateway processes
Be delivery focused meeting client and company requirements
