Key tasks and deliverables

We seeking a highly motivated individual with demonstrable system administration experience in Linux (preferably Ubuntu) with strong and effective problem solving skills. The successful candidate will join a team of five skilled professionals who currently design, build and operate the GDS internal network services described above.

The main responsibilities of the post are:
- Alongside the primary Linux sysadmin, provide day to day application and management of the Linux environment ensuring the server environment and dependent services are optimised. This will include the implementation of new services as and when required by GDS
- According to the skills of the candidate, to also provide support for other elements of our network environment as cover for the team members with primary responsibility; this may include work on network devices, Windows or Mac services but will be dependent on the current skills of the candidate
- As part of the team, maintain and enhance the network, by providing expertise and creating opportunities for others to share and practice your knowledge.
- Maintain and deliver a robust, scalable, network environment capable of supporting GDS' internal IT needs.
- Integrate and improve on existing processing systems.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:-

  • Monitoring, installation, configuration, management and maintenance of the UNIX Solaris Systems, to ensure secure services with minimum downtime.

  • Implementation and release of changes as submitted by the development team or customer(s).

  • Monitoring system hardware to ensure timely escalation and resolution of any faults.

  • Analysing system logs and identifying potential issues.

  • Providing application, maintenance and support.

  • Gather and assimilate customer(s) requirements for new IT Systems.

  • Adding new systems and removing redundant systems.

  • Prioritisation of workload to meet customer requirements and expectations .

  • Reporting any incident or situation where it is suspected the security has, or may have been compromised.

  • Knowledge and awareness of Project Management principles.

  • IT Security Awareness.

  • Planning and Risk Management skills.

  • Knowledge of Data Protection Principles and Freedom of Information Act .

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and IT service providers.

  • Solaris Administration.

  • Working knowledge of Solaris Systems.

  • Practical experience of server software and hardware build and maintenance.

Essential Skills:

  • Extensive experience of the system administration of Ubuntu and the delivery of new services on Ubuntu in a corporate environment

  • Extensive experience of the system administration of VMWare

  • Experience and knowledge of Shell Scripting

  • A thorough understanding of networking concepts and technologies and proven experience of network implementation and operation

  • Has proven problem solving and analytical skills

  • Enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and working in a multi-disciplinary team

  • A strong understanding of pre-emptive maintenance and monitoring and demonstrable experience of the design and implementation of monitoring and alerting systems

  • Demonstrable experience of Open source solutions and their implementation and operation.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with automated configuration management using Puppet

  • Use of Cloud-based systems and platforms

  • Experience of the system administration of MS Windows Server, Active Directory and WSUS, OR Apple OS X server in a corporate environment

  • Experience and understanding of Perl and python Scripting

  • Experience of user management and configuration with Samba.
