Nature of Work
Sample, test, and report disposition of all incoming raw materials and finished products, support production processes, control inventory of supplies, maintain equipment, maintain and keep current specification sheets, MSDS, Kosher certifications, and nutrient information sheets on all raw materials and finished products.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:
1. Sample and test raw materials and approve/reject based upon the results. If reject, let Production and Purchasing know immediately. Also, report the reject in writing to Purchasing.
2. Retest raw materials when needed and approve/reject based upon the results. If reject, let Production and Purchasing know immediately. Also, report the reject in writing to Purchasing.
3. Obtain and maintain Kosher certifications, specification sheets, MSDS, nutrient information, allergen claims for raw materials, and certificates of analysis when required by specifications.
4. Test potential suppliers' samples of current raw materials and report results to Purchasing.
5. Prepare and maintain raw material specification sheets.
6. Test finished products and approve/reject based upon the results. If reject, determine if batch can be salvaged or not. If it can be salvaged, inform Production what can be done to salvage the batch. If it cannot be salvaged, inform Production how to dispose of the batch in writing.
7. Perform tests required for specification sheets, MSDS, nutrient information sheets, and obtain kosher certifications for products.
8. Disseminate items in #5 to customers, both internal and external, when requested.
9. Based upon expertise, answer customer questions about products they are purchasing from us.
10. Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
11. Offer suggestions in solving problems and expediting tasks.
12. Create and write procedures, both testing and QC policies analysis.
13. Further educate oneself through courses, seminars, trade journals, and conversation with more experienced technical personnel.
14. Train new employees in the testing and procedures of the QC lab.
15. Utilize HACCP philosophy and procedures in everyday work routine.
16. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
17. Compliance with applicable company policies concerning maintaining a drug free work place is required.
18. Compliance with all company policies is required.
19. Other functions as required (nonessential functions).
20. Ensure adherence to all management systems including, ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 and Food Safety, with an understanding of Quality and Environmental Policies and Procedures. Responsible that these policies and procedures are implemented throughout the organization and all related activities under the position's jurisdiction.
Scope of Position
This position reports directly to the QC Manager. Incumbent must be able to work independently, relying on oral or written instructions. Incumbent must be able to solve routine problems. Incumbent must be capable of doing test development.
Working Conditions
This position operates in a laboratory environment 80-100% of the time and therefore incumbents are required to undergo on-going training about exposure to hazardous materials. Potential travel.
Major Accountabilities
Ensure that all raw materials and finished products conform to specifications as to safety and functionality.
Ensure that raw materials and finished products are stored and handled in accordance with GMPs.
Interact with internal and external customers in a positive and cooperative manner.
Supply internal and external customers with technical information in a timely manner.
Make decisions in questionable areas in absence of the QC Manager.
Make reports as requested by upper management.

SKILLS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Incumbent must possess good communication skills and basic PC knowledge (including MS Word and MS Excel). A bachelor's degree in food science, biology, or chemistry is required. At the discretion of management, the degree requirement may be waived if there is sufficient knowledge and experience. Incumbent must have at least two years' experience in laboratory work.
