The arc is extinguished by low-voltage micro circuit breakers (MCBs) using only air. These circuit breakers have what are known as "arc chutes," which are a series of parallel metal plates that are mutually insulated and serve to cool and divide the arc. In addition to increasing the arc voltage and acting as an extra resistance to restrict the current flowing through the circuit breaker, the arc is cooled down by being divided into smaller arcs. A current path's magnetic force can easily deflect the arc into the arc chutes thanks to the current-carrying components close to the contacts, but permanent magnets or magnetic blowout coils (used on circuit breakers for larger ratings) can also do the same. The arc chute's plate count is determined by the short-circuit.
