I worked on project based on JBoss 6.1 AS - especially on EJB and JMS, SOAP services and PostgresSQL database. Later I tried to bring new version based on WildFly AS with modern Java EE concepts. I prefer really pure Java EE projects than Spring based projects. This all Maven based. I prefer startups as well. Work with small amount of people, no more company stress - this is really killer.
I worked also with Docker containers and a little bit with kubernetes. Here I must say that this really not my cupple of tea.
