Main project features:
The objective of the supervision services is to ensure that all works under the 4 different works
contracts (FIDIC MDB) are implemented in compliance to the works contracts, the design and in
accordance with national legislation as well as with World Bank requirements and procedures. The
works shall be implemented with the envisaged time and budget frame to a quality as specified in
the contracts and as acceptable to the Employer.
Considering the hazardous working sites of this project environmental protection as well as health
& safety is a key issue throughout works implementation and therefore a main focus area of the
Engineer.
The project activities include work with hazardous materials, and this requires strict adherence to
the procedures of personnel individual protection as well as reduction of the environmental
pollution spread.
The Civil Works will consist of the following type of activities:
(i) remediation (closure, capture, removal plus environmental control measures) of industrial (some
toxic) waste disposal sites, including low level radioactive waste for the waste pile of Ulba
Plant;
(ii) environmental monitoring of soil, (ground) water and air related to remediation works and
accompanying preparation and implementation of health and safety plans;
(iii) Construction of geotechnical barriers for hazardous waste disposal facilities; treatment of
wastewater containing halogenated organics.
(iv) Ground Water Monitoring for UST Kamenogorsk City

Main project features: The project comprises the construction supervision of the rehabilitation of
the Yntymak (Intumak) reservoir on the Nura river in Central Kazakhstan and its technical
re-equipment.
Works include a 1.6km long and up to 40m deep slurry wall in the earth filled main dam, construction
of a dam regulated spillway with a capacity of 3,000 m³/s including apron, chute and stilling basin,
refurbishment of the existing bottom outlet, the installation of a small hydro power unit in the
bottom outlet (~700KW) and erection of a settlement for the future operator of the reservoir
including water supply and sanitation facilities.
Installation of water supply and sewage system, pump station and firefighting system.
The works contract was based on FIDIC MDB (harmonized) and World Bank's Standard Bidding Documents
for Works. Total value of certified works was USD 32.9 million.

Name of assignment or project: Construction Supervision for the Nura River Clean-Up Project
Year: 03/2007 - 08/2012

Main project features: The project comprises the supervision and coordination of the first 2 works
contracts within the World Bank financed Nura river clean-up Project, i.e. the construction and
operation of the Apan landfill, the demolition and clean-up of the Karbide factory and adjacent
sites and the clean-up of the Nura river and Zhaur swamp.
The former Karbide factory, origin of the mercury contamination in the Nura river valley is being
demolished and adjacent areas are being either partly cleaned-up or contained. In and along the Nura
river itself more than 2 million cubic meter of contaminated material must be removed.
River sediments are being excavated by hydraulic dredge whereas river banks and flood plains by
excavators. Transfer stations are used to prevent spreading of contamination during transport works.
A hazardous waste landfill has been constructed near to Temirtau where all contaminated material are
being disposed of in two different hazardous waste classes. 24 hours operation is required for all
transport works and the landfill to allow implementation of the works within the scheduled 4 years
period.
The entire works implementation is carried out following stringent H&S requirements and a strict
black - white zone concept featuring special sluices for personnel and equipment is enforced on all
construction sites. Parallel environmental monitoring is being performed by the Contractors under
the supervision of the Engineer.
A mercury reduction plant has been constructed and 20.000 cubic meter of contaminated water was
treated and rechanneled back to the Nura river. A sludge drying facility has been constructed and a
wastewater drain with length of 3 km has been reconstructed, partly in concrete DN 1800 pipes.
Design for drinking and technical water supply for Chaklovo village.
Installation of water supply and sewage system, pump station and firefighting system for landfill
settlement including construction of drainage system and waste water basin for landfill cells.
Technical and environmental of old drainage pipeline from Alash factory to Main Drain, 6 km length
and DN 1200.
The assignment contains all task required to act as "The Engineer" according to FIDIC.
