We require a Software Engineer for an initial 6 month contract role based on a Government Client site in Newport, South Wales to start ASAP...
Please be advised this role is outside of IR35.

Role:

To be part pf the Client's Business as Usual (BAU) Team - We require an experienced Software Engineer to assist with the operational support activities for the Client's systems which are used to collect and prepare data for a wide range of statistical outputs.

Duties include:

Provide operational support for applications written in Ingres ABF
Administer requests for support from help desk, other service delivery staff and/or users
Investigate issues and requests and determine appropriate action to take
Design complex programs and program modifications from specifications, using agreed standards and tools
Create, amend and keep track of programs in accordance with the design
Plan, design and conducts tests of programs; corrects errors and re-tests to achieve an error-free result
Conduct reviews of supplied specifications, with others as appropriate
Ensure all work is carried out and documented in accordance with required standards, methods and procedures
Monitor progress of requests for support/development and ensures users and other interested parties are kept informed
Contribute to peer reviews
Liaise with systems development staff or software suppliers on the development of system enhancements to overcome known problems or further fulfil user requirements
Provision of coaching and support to other team members including knowledge transfer

Essential skills/experience required:

Extensive knowledge of Ingres RDBMS and Ingres ABF
Advanced knowledge and experience of Ingres SQL
Expert knowledge of UNIX (ideally AIX)
Experience of engaging with customers directly to discuss requirements and issues
Experience of supporting business applications via a helpdesk
Excellent analysis/investigative and problem-solving skills
Experienced in producing complete solutions including documentation to agreed standards
Able to work on their own initiative, within agreed parameters and standards
Have excellent communication skills - in person and in writing
Provide mentoring, coaching and support to other members of the technical team

Desirable would be:

Knowledge and experience of OpenROAD 5.1. with an Ingres RDBMS Back End
Knowledge and experience of C
Experience of Agile techniques and principles
