UNIVERSITY OF EXETER SPORT-PERFORMANCE SPORT

The University of Exeter's Performance Programme works to support and develop student athletes to compete at a high level whilst studying in higher education. It organises the development of our elite sporting infrastructure including the management of our Performance Sports and Sports Scholarship Scheme.

Over 300 student athlete's benefit from the Performance Programme every year, including up to 50 Sports Scholars and a number of individually supported High Performance Bursars. The programme offers a comprehensive package of support services including state-of-the art training facilities, expert coaching, strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, sports massage, sports psychology, performance analysis and a range of athlete lifestyle workshops.

University of Exeter has previously been recognized as the Sunday Times Sports University of the Year in 2016 and is currently ranked 5 th in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) rankings, having finished in the top 5 for the last 2 years. For the 2 season University of Exeter are ranked no. 1 in the country for Rugby Union.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose of Role

To provide Performance Analysis support for the University of Exeter High Performance squads. This includes undertaking the role of Performance Analyst for Rugby Union, focusing on the BUCS Super Rugby team. The post holder will also be responsible for ensuring the remaining focus sports have access to performance analysis by working with Sports Science placement students to film and code BUCS and regional or national league match footage as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Rugby Union

•Film all 1st XV BUCS Super Rugby and Saturday league games to a high standard, capturing tight, wide and end-on angles - including away games.

•Code individual and team key performance indicators for all High Performance teams in the rugby club. This must be completed to a high standard and within two days of all games being played.

•Produce video and statistical presentations from the data to provide high quality feedback to the coaching staff and players from all teams.

•Produce and maintain a database for both team and individual data throughout the season.

•Upload all ball in play footage to an online digital library

•Provide individual feedback to players, outlining their highlights and work-ons after each game.

•Liaise with academy staff from the Exeter Chiefs to provide weekly feedback on current and possible players from the university to enhance their academy squad.

•Film training as requested by team coaches and provide video feedback on these sessions.

•Where possible organise the set up and filming of EURFC BUCS games, liaising with team captains to organise who will film the game.

Performance Sports

•Liaise with the High Performance Coordinator to advertise, recruit, train and supervise Sports Science placement students to support with performance analysis for Women's Rugby, Hockey, Netball and any other focus sport as requested by Head coach/Director of Sport.

•Ensure all Sports Science placement students have the suitable skills and knowledge to carry out their roles. This will involve ongoing training for performance analysis equipment and software, including sourcing external opportunities for work experience/shadowing with professional clubs and National Governing Bodies as appropriate.

•Ensure all equipment is maintained, fit for purpose and available for use as and when required, including the AP Capture camera, scaffold unit and multiple cameras/tripods.

•Manage equipment allocation and access to performance analysis sharing platforms (HUDL and Coach Logic) with Sports Science placement students, HPP athletes and HPP coaches and Directors.

•Provide training to HPP athletes on use of performance analysis sharing platforms (HUDL and Coach Logic).

•Have a long-term objective of progressing the High Performance Programme Performance Analysis at the University to a professional standard, and ensure there are processes in place to continually improve the facilities and support available to coaching staff and players.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Attainments/Qualifications

Essential

  • Minimum of a 2:1 undergraduate degree in Sport and Exercise Science or related in the last 3 years.
  • Satisfactory DBS check and clearance

Desirable

  • MSc in Sport and Exercise Science/Performance Analysis or other sports related subject.
  • Rugby Union coaching experience/qualifications.

Skills and Understanding

•Confident using camera equipment to film games to a high standard, including the independent set up and use of an AP Capture camera, and a tight and wide camera rig.

•Knowledge and experience of using Sportscode Pro, Gamebreaker plus, HUDL and Coach Logic. Must be competent in team and individual coding processes, live capturing, coding during games that are live streamed, uploading footage and organising media libraries to be accessed by coaches and HPP athletes.

•A high level of IT skills and use of Apple's MacOS.

•Competence in presentation skills using a variety of methods (video, graphs, statistical matrices).

Prior Experience

  • Volunteering, work experience, shadowing or paid work in a Higher Education Performance Sport environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of working in Performance Analysis in both Rugby Union and any 1 of our other focus sports (Hockey, Netball, Lacrosse, Sailing, Rowing, Golf, Cricket, Tennis). This should include extensive knowledge of the skills, tactics and gameplay of high level Rugby Union and a competent understanding of any 1 of our additional focus sports.
  • Volunteering, work experience, shadowing or paid work within a professional/premiership rugby club environment.

Behavioural Characteristics/ Personal Qualities and Attributes

  • Strong motivation to work in performance sport environment with student athletes.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-faceted team and build relationships with performance athletes, coaches and support staff.
  • Effective communication skills using email, phone and face to face with performance athletes, coaches, support staff and NGB staff as appropriate.
  • Organised and able to work to tight deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.
