Description

The Lead Microsoft UC Architect works with one main programme to migrate from using Cisco Unified Call Manager to using Microsoft Teams, with a procured Direct Routing capability. They will ensure delivery of the end-to-end technical architecture and implementation of designs based on user needs and requirements. This role will operate within a pan government and industry aware context.

Infrastructure architecture is split into technology domains and the Lead Microsoft UC Architect will work with other Lead Technical Architects to ensure the various domains integrate through well understood touchpoints.

The Lead Microsoft UC Architect has the responsibility for ensuring that designed solutions on the programme are fit for purpose, meet business needs, and highlight any areas of deficiency or strategic conflict. The Lead Microsoft UC Architect plays an active and often practical part in the realisation of the design to deliver the desired business outcomes and will be called upon as an expert to resolve conflicts with inter-dependencies in multiple initiative scenarios. The Unified Communications Lead Architect is expected to ensure the supporting infrastructure meets the needs of the overall end to end solution ie, the business, information, application, and technology aspects of the solution. They will work across multiple projects, and be expected to understand and influence the dependencies, overlaps and future implications of solutions.

About The Candidate (specialist skills & requirements):

Technical

  • You can translate technical concepts relating to infrastructure engineering, delivery management and service management so they are understood by all (Bridging the gap between the technical and non-technical - Expert).
  • You can understand technical governance and participate in or deliver the assurance of a service. This will involve reviewing changes to operational services as well as proposed designs
  • You can make and guide effective decisions, explaining clearly how the decision has been reached. You must have the ability to understand and resolve technical disputes across varying levels of complexity and risk
  • You can produce a strategy for technology that meets business needs. You can create, refine, and challenge patterns, standards, policies, roadmaps, and vision statements
  • You can work with business and technology stakeholders to translate business problems into technical designs. You can create an optimal design through an iterative process, aligning the user need with the system requirements and organisational objectives
  • You can look beyond the immediate technical problem and identify the wider implications. You can 'zoom out' in 3 dimensions: knowing relevant historical context and future impact; understanding how current work fits in broader contexts and strategies; and looking for deeper underlying problems and opportunities.
  • Microsoft MS700 certification desirable but not essential (as this is not a requirement it will not be considered as part of the process for appointing a successful candidate).
Experience
  • Extensive experience of Microsoft Unified communications stack including Microsoft Teams (including Voice Services) and associated services including SharePoint, Exchange Online and OneDrive.
  • Experience of Microsoft Teams Direct routing, including Voice migrations from traditional PABX systems to MS Teams.
  • Experience of working in a multi-supplier environment, both designing aspects of solutions and assuring the work of others to ensure coherent designs supporting an end-to-end service.
  • Experience of estimating and contributing to project planning, dependency, and risk maps from a technical perspective.
  • Experience of evaluating commercial tenders and recommending architectural options.
  • A desire to prove, pilot and learn new technologies and keep up to date with industry best-practice, external disruptors and adapt accordingly.
  • Knowledge of modern Microsoft "Evergreen Lifecycles" and how this can affect traditional on-premises network and end-user-computing offerings.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify areas where specialist input is required and to coordinate the required resources and consider their advice and input constructively in the broader context of a defined solution.
  • Knowledge of Migration from Cisco Jabber to Microsoft Teams.
