Description

We have an opportunity working within a unique, extraordinary business where each day pushes the boundaries of technology with Zephyr, the world's leading solar-electric stratospheric UAS. The leader in the fixed wing HAPS market, Zephyr will revolutionise earth observation and connectivity across many sectors.

Zephyr is a High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS), and is the only of its kind to have demonstrated day/night longevity in the stratosphere. Providing a persistent and adaptable solution, unlike other unmanned aircraft. Its persistence enables a capability of flying continuously for months at a time, at around 70,000 feet, above weather and conventional air traffic.

Working under supervision from the Zephyr Head of System Safety this role entails the production of safety deliverables to support Zephyrs design roadmap, future flight campaigns and type certification.

Job Profile

The responsibilities of the safety design lead include, but are not limited to:

  • Identifying derived safety requirements and supporting the Zephyr team in ensuring these requirements are suitably implemented and satisfied.
  • Collation and validation of data in support of the safety arguments.
  • Development and Maintenance of the System Safety Case and its various artefacts (PSSA, SSA, Hazard Logs, Fault Trees, GSN, Event Trees, Bow-Ties etc.).
  • Development and Maintenance of Air System Safety Case Reports.
  • Attending internal and external Safety Meetings as required (SSG, SWGs and PSC), representing the Head of Systems Safety when required.
  • Assisting in the implementation of the Zephyr Platform SEMP.
  • Support to Regulatory Approvals and Certification activity.
  • Support to Safety Audits carried out by the product assurance organisation.
  • Realisation of the customer's contracted safety objectives.
  • Review and validation of any safety data provided by suppliers.

Skills/Experience Required

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate proven solid experience of the following skills:

  • Understanding of Safety Analysis tools and processes including: Hazard Logs; FHA (FMEA), FTA, ETA, Bow-Tie and GSN.
  • Computer literate in MS Office desktop applications including: Visio; Word; Excel; PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of certification standards eg DO-; DO-254 is desirable (but can be learnt on-the-job).
  • Production of safety assessments in accordance with Def Stan 00-56 (or equivalent civil standards).
  • Ability to critically analyse System Requirements and derive appropriate Safety Requirements.
  • A broad engineering knowledge of aircraft airframe and electrical and mechanical systems would be desirable.
  • Knowledge of Fault Tree Software FaultTree+/Reliability Workbench or PTC Relex desirable.
  • In addition to related qualifications and training, solid and demonstrable evidence working within design/engineering environment, preferably with an aviation bias.
  • Experience of working with the MAA, CAA, FAA and other regulatory authorities would be a distinct advantage.
