Senior Media Officer - Nottingham - Public Sector - 3 months

Job Purpose Ensure the Council and its services are well represented (both online and offline) in local, regional, national and trade media

Key Responsibilities

  • Play a key role, with the Communications and Marketing Group Manager, in strategic planning in order to establish key objectives and targets for delivery
  • Lead on the establishment and delivery of work programmes and plans
  • Plan and manage resource allocation to ensure delivery of work programme and plans
  • Manage the functional budget for staffing and operation in order to deliver work plans
  • Take corrective action to ensure delivery of programmes and plans to time, cost and quality
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of the external operating environment and respond to advancements in technology and working practices
  • Champion the advancement and development of staff via motivational coaching and mentoring
  • Develop communication activity that is focused and appropriate to the target audience
  • Work flexibly across all communication disciplines as required by your manager, this may include occasional emergency/out of hours cover
  • Work with Cabinet Members, Chief Officers and employees across the Council in order to achieve agreed communications objectives, for example set up and prepare colleagues for interviews, prepare letters and speeches
  • React appropriately to media interest on behalf of the council
  • Key Accountabilities

  • Accountable to the Communications and Marketing Group Manager to;
  • Successfully deliver projects on budget and within set deadlines and to an agreed standard
  • Demonstrate the application of new working practice within relevant projects
  • Maintain up to date records of effective mentoring, coaching and development of staff dealing directly with the media
  • Ensure all activity is audience focused
  • Maximise the council's reputation by ensuring all the council receives appropriate credit in the media for it's involvement in delivering or funding services ad projects

    Education and Knowledge

  • Essential communications and marketing specific qualification
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the main issues and influences affecting the service area
  • Essential service specific knowledge of the latest developments in the field of media relations
  • Good understanding of social media
  • Personal skills and general competencies

  • Sets an excellent example of customer care for other staff.
  • Effectively sets direction for a team providing motivation for all to deliver high performance.
  • Anticipates customer needs to provide excellent service continually striving to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Sets challenging targets for performance for the team as well as delivering a high degree of personal effectiveness
  • Ensures the Council's policies for fairness and respect are delivered including setting high personal standards
  • Takes an active role in managing risk, health and safety and safeguarding issues
  • Excellent verbal and written English
  • Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years experience within communications and marketing
  • Experience of effective and efficient delivery in a relevant service area
  • Experience of developing working relationships at a senior level
