Description

Experienced Unix Engineer to join team in Newcastle.

The Unix Engineer will provide technical and operational support as part of a small team, to be based in Newcastle with occasional travel to London.

£250 - £270 a day

Responsibilities:

Participates as a member of development team.
Completes development of units with designs prepared by more senior developers.
Participates in code reviews.
Prepares and executes unit tests.
Applies growing technical knowledge to maintain a technology area (eg Website Development).
May perform unit design.
Applies the clients and 3rd party technologies to software solutions of moderate complexity.
Configures end-user or enterprise systems designed by more senior technologists.

Education and Experience:

Typically a technical Bachelors degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of 2 years of related experience or a Masters degree and up to two years of experience.

Essential Skills
Strong working knowledge of UNIX (Solaris).
Good interpersonal skills
Ability to communicate with a wide cross-section of users and adjust engagement style to suit the circumstances
Strong team player, capable of working as part of a virtual and logical team and independently as circumstances dictate.
Demonstrable working knowledge and understanding of the range of Service Operations and Service Management processes.
Demonstrable experience of running and delivering small to medium sized projects.
Ability to influence others.
Sound decision-making skills
Strong technical experience covering the Midrange server environment, Storage/Backup etc.
Demonstrable success in involvement with the Service Management functions and processes at a working level.
Working knowledge of PC and laptop hardware troubleshooting and configurations.
Experience with LAN/WAN configurations.
VPN and remote access experience strongly desired.

Essential Technical Prerequisites:-
In-depth knowledge of SVM and ZFS
Advanced knowledge of Solaris Virtualisation (Containers/Zones) Knowledge of security, hardening techniques and patch management
Naming Services skills, NIS, LDAP, Kerberos, PAM
Advanced troubleshooting techniques and performance tuning
Hardware knowledge of Oracle, Sun (T Series) and the clients hardware platforms.
Advanced Solaris JumpStart/Jet installation
A good working knowledge of UNIX (Solaris 10) server hardware and terminology.
Experience of the build out and configuration of Midrange/Middleware products. A working knowledge of server infrastructure and OS.
Knowledge of EMC clarion and Fibre connectivity
Ability to follow technical installation guides and/or and conduct bare metal builds from scratch for a range of products and technologies
Experience and knowledge of platforms Oracle/SUN M, T V series and E25K
Experience in Oracle/Sun cluster 3.3
