Description

The Modern Firm (www.themodernfirm.com) designs, markets and maintains websites for small law firms across the country. We are looking for front end developers that absolutely love WordPress and responsive design. This position could be full-time, part-time or a contract with set hours.

About Us
We work with 700+ small law firms and between new clients and existing ones we launch about 150 websites a year. We are a location independent company with a team of eight employees and various contractors. Four of us are in Ann Arbor, MI, two in Ohio, one in Minnesota and one in Washington state. Our team is comprised of smart and fun people that are great at what they do (https://www.themodernfirm.com/about-us/meet-our-people). If you happen to be in Ann Arbor, you can office with us at the Workantile coworking community (www.workantile.com)

I have built the company from the ground up to embrace a modern meaning and way of work. Hire great people, let them do their thing, don't sweat the small stuff, be where you want to be, flex your work hours to weave work and life together, enjoy what you do and the people around you.

About The Job
The developers we're looking for must love WordPress and website development inside and out. The ideal candidates are always thinking about making things more efficient and and are perfectionists, but not to a fault. They will embrace new things and like solving problems. All of our design work is pretty custom but we don't unnecessarily reinvent the wheel. Every website is responsive and all sites are coded on WordPress as a child theme of our custom parent theme framework, which adds tons of law firm specific features to WordPress. Our framework also handles much of the work needed for making sites responsive and contains various plugins, shortcodes and custom post types common for the legal industry. The first several pages of our portfolio (https://www.themodernfirm.com/portfolio/law-firm-websites) give a good sampling of our work and code. Most of the sites are in the range of 5-30 pages in size.

In addition to developing client sites, there will be ongoing development and maintenance of our framework to add new features and ensure compatibility with future Wordpress releases. Long term we need to be able to explore CMS options beyond WordPress should it's development become more stagnant than it already is.

Most of the job (50-60%) will be coding themes for our client websites. The remaining time will be spent assisting our support staff with more sophisticated changes/features to existing websites and the ongoing development of our framework or future CMS system.

Technical Skills Required
  • Comprehensive understanding of Wordpress, Plugin Development, Custom Post Types and Multisite
  • Full-stack experience greatly valued but the majority of the work skews towards the front end
  • Understanding of WordPress coding best practices and high level of Wordpress API knowledge
  • Ability to code Wordpress themes from scratch, we don't work with any commercial themes
  • Object Oriented PHP, jQuery, Javascript, HTML5, DHTML, CSS, MySQL and understanding of cross browser/cross platform issues
  • Detailed understanding of responsive design and coding techniques (ultra important)
Ability to give design and usability feedback to team so that we can all keep learning

  • Other Requirements
  • Native or native equivalent English speaking
  • Located in Eastern, Central, Mountain or Pacific time zones
  • If seeking employee status, must be located within the United States.

  • Full-time compensation is $60,000-$75,000 depending on qualifications. Full-time includes health, retirement, vacation and home-office reimbursement allowance. Part-time and contract rates will be determined based on various factors but will be proportionally in line with the full-time rate. We are presently set up as an employer in Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota and Washington, but don't hesitate to apply if you are not in one of those states.

Getting Started - Lets Try a Project
We're looking to form really positive long term relationships and are open employment on a full-time, part-time basis or a contract for set hours per week. For the right person we could make due with as little as 20 hours per week, all the way up to full-time, we're certainly busy enough! I've found that the best way to see if everyone gets along is to get started on a contract project or two. Once familiar with our framework, most of our sites take about 3-6 hours to code into a theme.

    How to apply?
Send a cover letter, resume and sample work. If you can possibly include a zip file of some of your WordPress theme work that would be fantastic.
