Catalpa International is a nonprofit design and innovation organisation that builds amazing things to
assist governments, NGOs, communities and donors to make decisions to improve the delivery of aid
and services. We work across a number of sectors, including health, agriculture, finance, governance,
mobile services and advocacy. Catalpa combines innovative technologies with projects that improve
the lives of individuals.

Catalpa’s work has included partnerships with the Government of Timor-Leste, the Government of
Myanmar, the Australian Government and development partners such as ILO, FAO, UNICEF, WHO,
USAID, European Commission, World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.

POSITION SUMMARY
The 'User Interface and User Experience Web Designer' will join the Catalpa team as part of an
exciting phase of growth for the organisation. You’ll work in a talented and interdisciplinary design
team, with a strong creative culture, and help us deliver high impact work that seeks to address
international development challenges.

This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a creative environment, loves building amazing
applications that are simple to use and nice to look at, and believes in the potential of design to
address development challenges.

You will be working on some very exciting projects including Timor-Leste's first mHealth project Liga
Inan (www.ligainan.org) to the worlds first open-source Aid Information Management System called
Openly, and you will also helping us create new products and services.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The UI/UX web designer will be engaged in range of projects and be involved in all stages of the
software lifecycle from design through development, testing and deployment to maintenance.
  • Collaborate with small, diverse teams to identify design opportunities, brainstorm, and sketch
    designs for software.
  • Create and interpret visual design mockups in order to develop software ranging from lightweight clickable prototypes to production-ready applications.
  • Participate in research trips and user interviews to inform and inspire the design process.
  • Debrief and discuss user feedback with the design team, in order to synthesize research into meaningful design iterations.
  • Once products are out in the wild, support their ongoing testing and iterate based on user feedback and product requirements.

  • Participate in design workshops and training programs.
  • Provide insights and feedback into the creation user training materials.


  • IDEAL CANDIDATE
    You are passionate about the social sector and design. You love building applications that inspire
    others, and create impact. You would be smart enough to work at a top company, but you would like to
    work for an organisation that does great things that help people. You’re experienced, but you also like
    to learn new things. And you want to work with smart people and have fun building something great.

    You also meet most (if not more) of the following requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field, or an intriguing reason for not having one.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience—ideally some within design and/or creative organisations.
  • Experience collaborating with a design team through the entire design/build process.
  • A strong understanding of human-centered design principles and processes.
  • Outstanding portfolio of previous UI/UX work.
  • Able to effectively communicate design ideas through wireframes and user flows.
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment.
  • Proven ability to build products with HTML5, jQuery, Bootstrap, and D3.js.
  • Competence with Django / Jinga2 template languages.
  • Experience with a versioning system such as Git or Mercurial.
  • A strong focus on simplicity, usability & accessibility.
  • A passion for making great products, and most importantly;
  • You’re fun to work with.

    WORKING REMOTELY
    We know Timor-Leste is pretty far-away. So you may elect to apply for this position as a Remote
    Developer. In this case, please clearly state this in your application. In addition, a successful Remote
    Developer applicant would be required to undertake a two month orientation process at the Catalpa
    country office in Timor-Leste.
