Description

Principal Engineer (Shock and Dynamics) - Structural, Stress, Shock, Vibro-acoustic Isolations

A Principal Engineer (Shock and Dynamics) with Structural, Stress, Shock and Vibro-acoustic Isolations is required to work on a twelve month contract with the possibility of extension for our Defence client based in Cumbria.

The Shock & Dynamics Department is part of the Central Engineering Services Group, supporting all major Submarine programmes. Specifically the department is responsible for the design of resiliently mounted modules, rafts and mounting arrangements to provide shock and vibro-acoustic isolation, and for demonstrating that the Submarine can withstand the effects of non-contact underwater explosions resulting from Naval attack.

Overview of the Principal Engineer (Shock and Dynamics) contract role

The role requires a pro-active approach to seek out all required supporting information while demonstrating personal resourcefulness and a desire to develop and widen professional capabilities.

Specific duties include:

  • Undertake mounting system and structural design to provide shock and vibration isolation for Submarine equipment & systems.
  • Perform assessments of support structures, structural seats/foundations, fasteners and welds using a mixture of finite element analysis, in-house software, classical stress calculation techniques and application of standard code formulae.
  • Assess the structural adequacy of simple mechanical items and systems.
  • Articulate and present complex technical arguments clearly, logically and simply.
  • Liaise with industrial partners and the UK MoD to coordinate technical development and research activities, or define/influence design requirements, methods and acceptance criterion.
  • Support the shock design function through all stages of the product life cycle, including providing specialist design advice, conducting detailed analysis and providing evidence for acceptance and fitness for purpose.
  • Specialist roles use advanced finite element analysis (FEA) methods, including fluid structure interaction to simulate underwater explosions, and mathematical coding for standalone applications or to support FEA.
  • Confirm beyond reasonable doubt by review, surveillance and audit, that those assumptions underpinning engineering data, analysis methodologies, and interpretation of results have been validated.
  • Represent the shock and dynamics group, working in multi-functional teams to determine the best integrated solution, seeking supporting data and background information to effectively complete shock design activities.
  • Produce evidence in support of qualification, legislative requirements and safety justifications and provide specialist support for associated activities.
  • Provide realistic programme status, identify problem areas and implement agreed recovery plans.

Key skills required for the Principal Engineer (Shock and Dynamics)

  • Degree level education in a Mechanical/Structural/General Engineering, Maths or Physics or equivalent in terms of naval shipbuilding design experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels through oral/written briefings and technical reports
  • Ability to produce timely and professional safety assessments and reports and work as part of a team
  • Detailed knowledge of classical stress analysis and the ability to use appropriate first principles and/or code formulae
  • Knowledge of structural dynamics
  • Knowledge of finite element analysis methods and software is considered advantageous.
  • Sufficient experience to be able to identify unusual characteristics and other departures from normal practice that may require deeper investigation
  • Experience in the management of technical interfaces
  • The ability to analyse complex problems and identify the most critical issues

The role is based in Barrow in Furness, Cumbria - commutable from Carnforth, Milnthorpe, Lancaster, Morecambe, Penrith, Workington, Whitehaven and The Lake District
