Description

Demand Progress is looking for an experienced campaigner and email writer to help power the online campaigns that engage our more than two million affiliated activists who fight for the rights and freedoms needed for a modern democracy.

Ideal candidates live for the 24-hour news cycle, breaking down complex issues and crafting creative, exciting content that motivates our members to take action on the issues they care about and to invest in the future of our grassroots movement.

Essential roles and responsibilities

To be a successful writer at Demand Progress, you'll need to be able to write in a clear, compelling way about our work on issues like internet freedom, surveillance reform, as well as Wall Street accountability and money-in-politics reform through Demand Progress's Rootstrikers project (Rootstrikers.org). Strong candidates will thrive when it comes to:

- Having a finger on the pulse of the netroots. Seeing lots of Facebook shares on a transformative bill just introduced in Congress? Demand Progress members calling out an injustice on Twitter? While we'll always have a set of core campaigns, our members desire to stay engaged. No matter how big or small the victory, you know what it takes to build petitions and spark a movement at a moment's notice.
- Employing industry best practices -- and your own best practices -- to write great actions and fundraising emails. You've got a knack for knowing what works, but you're not afraid of trying something new when it comes to writing an email.
- Testing, testing, testing. The A/B test is your best friend. Drafting multiple variations of a call or petition ask doesn't scare you. You'll do whatever it takes to scale up the best response to an email.
- Monitoring list health. Is response rate down? Alarmed by an increasing number of bounces? You love metrics, domain reports and pitching strategies for improvement.

Location

The position will involve telecommuting, with a strong preference for individuals based in Washington, DC, or New York City. Travel to conferences and meetings is periodically required.

Salary

Demand Progress will offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience. A health insurance coverage stipend will be provided and Demand Progress will cover travel expenses. The position is at-will.

Experience

Candidates will ideally have experience writing to engage activists and drive action, with 2-5 years of work experience.

Experience in one or more of the following areas isn't required, but is a big plus:

- Producing engaging social media content and graphics that will keep our community informed about the issues they care about
- Basic (or advanced!) knowledge of HTML and CSS coding
- SQL or other database experience

About Demand Progress

Demand Progress is a national grassroots group with more than two million affiliated activists who fight for basic rights and freedoms needed for a modern democracy.

We work to win progressive policy changes for ordinary people through organizing and grassroots lobbying. We focus on issues of civil liberties, government reform, and money in politics.

We run online campaigns to rally people to take action on the news that affects them -- by contacting Congress and other leaders and spreading the word in their own communities.

We work in Washington to provide an advocate for the public in all the decisions that affect our lives.
