Communications Officer - Press Office/PR

As Communications Officer you will be working as part of a small team and reporting to the Communications Manager, to implement a programme of activity which communicates the decisions and activities to all key stakeholders, including press, parliamentarians and industry opinion formers. To deliver proactive and reactive media and press handling for a range of discrete projects, issues and announcements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handling both reactive and proactive media relations: publicising activity through a range of traditional and digital media channels, and drafting press materials from lines against enquiry through to press releases and communications handling plans.
  • Leading on discrete projects as required, including the publication of reports or decisions. Liaising regularly with team leaders and project team leads to draft and approve press materials.
  • Using social and digital media to help communicate with audiences, stakeholders and the media.
  • Preparing research and briefing material, particularly in advance of media interviews, speeches and other public events.
  • With Communications team colleagues, working to ensure effective use of their range of experience and knowledge in all communications activity.

Essential Experience:

  • This is NOT an admin or clerical role - Proven experience of press office/PR work in a large organisation.
  • A proven record of achievement in media relations, with the ability to write clear press releases and copy.
  • A strong news sense and demonstrable ability to spot communications risks
  • The ability to handle journalists' enquiries, frequently under pressure and often concerning sensitive issues, with tact and discretion, including referring up for advice where necessary or appropriate.
  • Experience of using social media platforms and new technology as part of a press office/PR role would be desirable.
