Commercial Manager - Rail industry

A Commercial Manager with Rail Industry experience is required to work on a 4 month contract (with the possibility of extension) based in central London.

Objective:

  • Manage the commercial relationship (train operating company who run the franchise) on behalf of the DfT
  • Monitor long term interests
  • Ensure the delivery of all obligations - benefits realisations etc

Key Tasks and Deliverables include:

  • Leading and managing the commercial relationships with VTEC at Board level. There is a significant amount of work at the moment in ensuring that contractual obligations are delivered.
  • Setting up new processes for the management of new obligations eg Innovation Fund, Stations Maintenance Account.
  • Negotiate variations to contractual obligations where appropriate, ensuring outcomes are consistent with affordability constraints, represent value for money.
  • Provide advice to Ministers, Dft Board members and Rail Executive on matters relating to commercial relationships and other issues.
  • Provide challenge on operational, projects and financial performance, highlighting key trends and issues using data, allocating resources effectively and putting in place improvement plans when necessary.;
  • Building on cross-franchise policy work;

Experience/Skills/Knowledge (essential/desirable Dependent on combination of skills and experience):

  • Considerable experience of driving commercial relationships and negotiating effective business deals, preferably but not necessarily within the transport industry.
  • Exceptional financial awareness coupled with effective planning and organizational skills.
  • Experience of building and managing stakeholder relationships at the highest levels.
  • First-class communication and networking skills.
  • Ability to analyse and evaluate information in order to identify the main issues and risks in complex commercial problems, using this information to make decisions that are in the best interests of passengers and taxpayers.
  • Ideally, you will also have experience in railway commercial delivery and a wider understanding of the public sector.

  • Evidence of building/managing senior stakeholder relationships, preferably within a commercial capacity

  • Good understanding of Profit/Loss
  • Rail industry experience
