Senior Highway Designer - 6 Month Temporary Contract
We are recruiting for one of the nation's largest commercial companies who provide an extensive range of construction services including construction management, general contracting, design and build and preconstruction.
The Role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a proactive Senior Highway Designer to join our Highways team on a 6 month temporary contract based in Leatherhead, Surrey with occasional travel within the M25 DBFO area. As the successful candidate you will provide cost effective design solutions to maintain or improve the road assets to the standards agreed and considering the needs of key stakeholders to enable delivering the outcomes agreed by our client to programme and budget.
Key Requirements
- manage resources within highways and other design or support disciplines to deliver the agreed outcomes
- agree the briefs, programmes and budgets with the Design Manager/Project Manager or client
- manage external resources to deliver the agreed outcomes
- allocate tasks to other design disciplines and monitor progress and costs
- prepare briefs, works instructions, designs, fee estimates, reports, specifications and other deliverables for highways schemes to budget and programme
- monitor and check designs and ensure they meet the brief
- ensure designs are appropriate and meet the expected levels of quality
- seek innovation in the delivery of schemes and techniques used in design and construction
- ensure IMS 14001 is actively applied to all designs
- deliver large complex highway schemes (or several smaller schemes) to programme and budget
- allocate tasks to other supporting members of the Highways team and oversee delivery and report on resourcing issues
- deliver less complex schemes and provide highways advice to programme and budget
- provide professional and technical competence and mentoring in highway engineering
- report on a bi-weekly basis to the Design Manager on performance against budget and programme
- identify schemes that need to be included in the Four Year Programme
- assist the Network Strategy Manager in the proposals process
- ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm
- support the delivery of the business' Sustainability activities
- ad-hoc duties as required by management
You
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution (ICE or CIHT)
- Registered with the Engineering Council to at least IEng level
- 5 days of CPD in last 12 months including 3 related to highway engineering
- Project management skills
- Competent in highway engineering
- Broad skills, knowledge and understanding of other highway related design areas
- Competent in exercising the Designer's obligations of CDM
- Knowledge of CDM and other H&S legislation
- Hold appropriate CSCS card registration
- Understanding of environmental requirements of highway schemes
- Excellent communication skills
- Detailed knowledge of design codes (DMRB/MCDHW/TSRGD etc.) relevant to highway design
- Knowledge of the use of computer design applications
- Broad knowledge of Quality Management & IMS
- Relevant vocational qualifications (MEng/MSc/BEng/BSc/HNC and HND)
- Appropriate recent experience in highway engineering on Local Authority or the strategic high speed network
- Recent experience of leading small design teams and coordinating interfaces with other disciplines
- Recent experience of working in a multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience in the design and construction of UK highway schemes
- Licensed to drive in the UK or with reciprocal agreement
- Ability to develop relationships with all level of Stakeholders
