Position: Senior Unix Systems Engineer
Location: Arklow, Co. Wicklow (Approx 1 hour outside of Dublin)
Salary: €350 - €450 per day (This is Negotiable) Depending on Experience
Contract Type: 12 Month Contract (Strong Potential for Contract Extension)

SENIOR UNIX SYSTEMS ENGINEER

Our client a leading Financial Services Organisation based in Arklow. Co Wicklow are looking for an experienced Senior Unix Systems Engineer to join their team on initial 12 Month contract with strong potential for further contract extensions.

Senior Unix Systems Engineer Responsibilities:

This role is in direct support of the server build/commissioning process for Unix Servers (Oracle Solaris) and help to support the Linux systems engineer; RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).

Server Hardening

  • Participate in the server commissioning process, and performs the server hardening function.
  • This role will harden the Servers; apply security updates (patches), configure Servers in accordance with baseline security standards, install Global Information Security's (GIS) security agents, run vulnerability scans and respond to vulnerabilities identified.
  • This role will also provide process metrics, and the hardening certification documentation.

Baseline Management

  • Writes and maintains puppet scripts for server baseline configurations.
  • Works with requestor of the server during the remediation of Baseline Configuration non-compliance, or directs the requestor how to get a Security Risk Extension.
  • Uses baseline scanning tool to validate adherence to baseline standards, and works with GIS to correct issues associated with the baseline scanning tool; Tenable.
  • Participates in the review of new baseline configuration standards.
  • Keeps Puppet scripts up-to-date for existing OS versions, and builds new scripts for new OS versions.

Patch Management

  • Researches and collects Solaris OS and 3rd Party patches.
  • Evaluates and tests Solaris OS and 3rd Party patches. Patches Solaris assets and escalates any issues or problems associated with a patch or the patching process to the GIO Governance Manager.
  • Works to continually improve and automate the server commission hardening process, and participates in the patching process.

Vulnerability Management

  • Works with GIS, the project manager, and the server's requestor to remediate or otherwise mitigate risk associated with known vulnerabilities.
  • Works with the server's requestor to submit a Security Risk Extension (SRE) if the issue cannot be remediated.
  • Flexibility and ingenuity are required skills when working to mitigate the risk of vulnerabilities with no known remediation.

Policy and Compliance

  • Understands and applies all policies and procedures associated with Windows Server Engineering and Administration.
  • Notifies GIO Governance Manager if processes or procedures should to be updated or optimized.
  • Participates in audit and compliance requests.

Communications

  • Communicates daily with the project manager any issues, constraints, risks or road-blocks. Provides daily updates of tasks completed and task to-be worked the next day.
  • Provides weekly metrics and status to the GIO Governance Manager.

Senior Unix Systems Engineer Requirements/Skills:

  • Preferred Bachelor's degree in related Information Technology discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in a similar role
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Experience with Solaris Systems
  • Patch management experience
  • Experience deploying Puppet into a Solaris Environment is an advantage
  • Experience with Oracle Virtualization, Linux Engineering (RHEL), Configuration Management, Vulnerability Management (Preferably with Tenable), Audit and Compliance
