Job type: Contract inside IR35

Robert Walters have patterned with Shell Energy who are looking for a IT Operations Engineer to join for a initial 6 month contract (inside ir35) the role is very likely to extend and is based in Coventry

Your part in the team:

We're looking for engineers to aid in the support and management of our production environment. The engineers will be responsible for ensuring the systems are proactively managed and events are responded to in a timely manner.

The role will involve identifying new monitoring points, responding to user queries and creating scripts that can be re-used to improve the speed at which issues can be resolved. Also to monitor and action items in our Trouble Ticketing system and Jira queues.

  • Provide support for in-house (developed by SERL) systems, you will be the first point of contact regarding problems and follow TechOps incident management and escalation processes
  • Ensure KPIs for business applications are identified and monitored, alerting the business to problems highlighted by monitoring systems.
  • Working as part of a team to provide restoration of disrupted services, you will identify and implement workarounds to maintain service of live systems.
  • Ensure positive working relationships are maintained with the business.
  • Maintain communication and relationships with key 3rd party suppliers.
  • Provide data to the Business Applications Manager in support of weekly/monthly reporting
  • Carry out upgrades where required.
  • Involvement in capacity planning.
  • Involvement in provision of disaster recovery.
  • Ongoing project work in support of application development.
  • Manage expectations so that priorities and timescales are understood.
  • Monitor customer satisfaction, verifying the speed and quality of the solutions provided to the business.

What you'll need to help you make the best of the role:

  • Proficient in at least one Scripting language (bash, python)
  • Red Hat/CentOS, Ubuntu and other Linux based operating systems
  • Container technologies (Kubernetes, Docker, Swarm/ECS, EKS)
  • Networking concepts and network protocols including IP, TCP, UDP, HTTP, TLS
  • Network services including load balancing, routing, DMZs, and Firewalls
  • Security concepts, technologies and tools
  • Monitoring tools, logging, metrics and alarms
  • Database concepts, technologies and tools including cloud database services
  • Experience of incident management processes
  • Good understanding of REST services and associated verbs.
  • Good understanding of JBoss/Tomcat/Apache
  • Good understanding of Puppet/Rundeck

The nice to haves:

  • AWS certification
  • Database knowledge (SQL/NoSQL)
  • Familiarity with DevOps culture, methodologies and tools
  • Familiarity with Agile development, deployment concepts, methodologies and tools (CI/CD)
  • Experience with and interest in open source software communities
  • AWS IaaS and PaaS services
  • AWS networking, VPC, load balancing, security groups
  • Infrastructure as code and automation tools such as Cloud Formation and Terraform
  • ITIL V3 or V4 Qualifications or at least a working knowledge and experience of ITIL Delivery processes and disciplines
