Work Location: Hybrid/Newcastle BPV, Peel Park Blackpool, Leeds QH, Manchester, Sheffield

Description:
Providing authoritative advice and guidance and contribute to policy and standards.
Delivering shared tooling to aid adoption of good practice
Defining and delivering deployment mechanisms to increase security and reliability of deployments
Helping to define and encourage adoption of common software development process and practice.
Codifying policy and good practice to move way from ad hoc compliance assessment by enabling continuous monitoring and enforcement in CI/CD pipelines.
Creating coherent, integrated systems to encourage reuse and reduce rework and toil.
Building relationships and reputation to help drive adoption of initiatives and encourage innovation and sharing.
Summary of role & responsibilities
Technical Breadth - Anticipates and exploits opportunities through the recognition of new digital technologies to enhance capability in alignment with business goals.
Release and Deployment - Ensures that management processes, tools, techniques, and resources (including automation) are in place to ensure that the transition of services, service components and packages are planned and compliant and that test and validation and configuration management are partnered in all release and deployment activities.
System Integration - Establishes standards and procedures across a service life cycle including the development life cycle and ensures that practitioners adhere to this.
Modern Standards Approach - Strong understanding and application of the most appropriate modern standards and practices. Takes responsibility for coaching and guiding others.
Programming and build - Advises and sets local or team-based standards, tool and techniques and how to apply standards and methods, ensuring compliance, and maintains technical responsibility for all the stages and iterations of a project. Selects appropriate development methods. Provides technical advice and guidance to stakeholders.
Changing and Improving - Encourage, recognise and share innovative ideas from a diverse range of colleagues and stakeholders. Create an environment where people feel safe to challenge and know their voice will be heard. Make changes which add value and clearly articulate how changes will benefit the business.
Making Effective Decisions - Ensure decision making happens at the right level, not allowing unnecessary bureaucracy to hinder delivery. Encourage both innovative suggestions and challenge from others, to inform decision making. Analyse and accurately interpret data from various sources to support decisions.
Managing a Quality Service - Ensure adherence to legal, regulatory and security requirements in service delivery. Proactively manage risks and identify solutions. Establish how the business area compares to industry best practice.
Communicating and Influencing - Communicate with others in a clear, honest and enthusiastic way in order to build trust. Explain complex issues in a way that is easy to understand.

Knowledge and Experience required:
eg Previous experience of working for a government dept.

Knowledge and experience of an everything-as-code environment. Codifying as much as possible by defining pipelines as code, infrastructure as code, security and quality tests and policy as code.
Knowledge and experience of providing common components, patterns, and/or platforms to improve consistency and drive improvements to quality and security baselines. Appreciation of the trade-offs between centralisation/standardisation and decentralisation/autonomy.
Experience of contributing to good practice, policies, standards, and code bases as part of an engineering community and a wider organisation.
Experience of working with engineering teams and other stakeholders to drive adoption of process and tooling through leadership and facilitation.
Experience defining and delivering solutions where there may be no obvious off-the-shelf solution and innovation and strong hands-on technical capability may be required.
Experience with multiple hosting paradigms (eg IaaS, container orchestration, serverless) and knowledge of the commonalities and divergences when contributing to standards, policy, and good practice guidance.
Knowledge across a range of security domains, for example, identity, secrets management, PKI, vulnerability management, policy and governance.
