Electronics/Electrical Engineer

Farnborough

3 months -Shift working required

Education Required: HND/HNC

Main duties:

  • Provide Electronic and Electrical support to this facility, reporting to the Controls, Systems and Instrumentation: Farnborough II Team Leader.
  • Set up Instrumentation and Data acquisition systems in line with the tunnel programme. Rig and derig scale aircraft models to be tested.
  • Fault finding, diagnosis and maintenance of electronic and electrical systems down to component level where necessary to maintain tunnel systems (LV & HV) and instrumentation.
  • Preparation & Maintenance of documentation for electronic and electrical.
  • Support customer trials.
  • Carry out Electrical Authorised Person (AP) duties to JSP375 for, large LV & HV electrical machines and Electrical plant (training will be provided).
  • Plan and cost maintenance and facility Electronic & Electrical upgrades.
  • Train & supervise other members of staff in the team.
  • Perform basic Electronic and Electrical design work and system integration
  • Operate Facility plant equipment (appropriate training will be provided).
  • Co-ordination of the calibration of test equipment and instrumentation for the 5MWT(Electronic, Electrical & Mechanical).
  • Ideally the candidate would be willing to deploy flexibly between the Wind Tunnel Facility and the QinetiQ site Haslar in Gosport, with another existing staff member covering the reciprocal. Also assist other teams and sites if required.
  • May be required to carry out other secondary roles as part of the Wind Tunnel facility. eg Plant Controller, Building Incident Officer, etc.

Requirements of the role:

  • Electronics/Electrical Engineering to NVQ level 4/HND (or equivalent). Or, higher or suitable experience (evidence required).
  • Possess a working knowledge of Electrical and Electronic equipment and systems.
  • Have a good working knowledge of instrumentation and data acquisition equipment (preferably pressure transducers, strain gauges, temperature transducers, load cells and test equipment).
  • A strong and demonstrated ability to work 'hands-on' from first principles to safely diagnose electrical and electronic issues (to board level) and implement prompt, effective and safe repair schemes.
  • Ability to interpret Electronic and Electrical drawings.
  • Be literate with the operation of computers and common software packages, in particular basic operating knowledge of Microsoft office Word and Excel (training could be provided).
  • Knowledge of maintenance principles.
  • Capable of working at heights and in enclosed spaces & on occasions outside.
  • Advantageous, but not required (as training can be provided):
  • Some knowledge and experience of PLCs and microcontrollers, their maintenance and programming.
  • General/broad knowledge and experience of distributed control and closed loop control systems.
  • A sound knowledge of electric motors, and motor control & operation methods.
  • Possess some knowledge of power electronics.
  • Familiarity with safe systems of work including the issue and receipt of permits to work etc.
  • Ability to use Electronic/Electrical drawing packages such as ORCAD, Autocad electrical/Solidworks electrical.
  • Knowledge and experience of planned maintenance systems.
  • Knowledge of Electrical working regulations. If not already achieved BSth Edition then training will be provided.
  • Behavioural requirements:

Hours 37 per wk. standard

When not on shift:

Mon-Thurs: 08:30 to 17:00 Fri: 08:30 to 16:30 with one hour lunch break.

QinetiQ operates flexible working as part of its benefits. When not on a customer test there's flexibility in what hours are worked.

However, flexibility is required at times and this may include overtime and working through lunch breaks, with occasional weekend work.

When we have a customer test it is a requirement to work casual shifts.

This is on a double day shift basis and is rotated weekly:

  • Mon-Thurs: 6:00-14:30 or 14:00-22:30
  • Fri: 6:00-14:30 or 13:30-22:00.
