Intelligent Resource Limited is working in partnership with a major public sector organisation in the UK. We are currently recruiting for an Senior External Communications Adviser role based in Chelmsford, Essex.

Job Title: Senior External Communications Adviser

Location: Chelmsford, Essex

Duration: up to 2 months

Job purpose

The Senior External Communications Advisor is a challenging and exciting role with responsibility for developing and driving the organistion's engagement with the public, partners and stakeholders, through a variety of channels including traditional and on-line media, social media and direct engagement. The role will be responsible for delivering the external communications strategy, which will align to the organisation's corporate objectives and business plans. The role will look to change behaviors, perceptions and attitudes as well as increase levels of understanding and satisfaction of the organisation and the services it provides.

The role requires an individual who is adaptable, adept at working in a fast-moving and customer-first environment that relies on Real Time communications, welcomes change and has a growth mindset. They will be required to work flexibly and collaboratively across structural boundaries in support of key outcomes.

Accountabilities

  • Engage with stakeholders on a consultative rather than a supplier basis, promoting the marketing and communications function as a centre of excellence and developing and defining the external communications strategy for the organisation.

  • Deliver robust reporting on the implementation of the strategy and its impact in terms of enhancing the organisation's reputation.
  • Responsible for establishing, implementing and delivering reputational and issues management, including crisis situations, consultations and changes to services.
  • Establish an outreach approach to recruit and maintain a strong network of advocates and influencers including journalists, and professional contacts. Make links and work collaboratively with partner organisations.
  • Responsible for creating a programme of activity to communicate the organisation's strategic priorities, both creating and curating content.
  • Responsible for using a consultative approach, providing advice and guidance across all levels of the organisation on the most effective and appropriate way to engage with audiences, promoting the benefits of communications activity that contributes towards the organisation's outcomes.
  • Guide and advise organisation members and staff who may need to act as spokespeople for the organisation.
  • Work closely with the Public Affairs Strategist to support the delivery of the public affairs strategy and ensure appropriate alignment between external communications and public affairs activity.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across Communications and Marketing, sharing knowledge, insights and data, particularly ensuring campaign activity complements other external communications activity.
  • Specific individual and shared targets and objectives are defined annually within the performance management framework.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent by experience.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and expert knowledge in relevant professional area.
  • Significant experience of executing successful external communications activity and/or campaigns on a local and national level, on behalf of a large, complex organisation (public/political sector experience an advantage).
  • Experience of reputational management and crisis communications.
  • Strong news judgment and pitching skills, with excellent interpersonal writing and presentation skills and an ability to communicate clearly and accurately to a variety of audiences.
  • Experience of working in a political environment, skills in understanding and responding to different perspectives and taking a cross organisational perspective.
  • Evidence of implementing earned media strategies in the context of fully integrated marketing campaigns.
  • Experience in a Communications and Marketing advisory/consultancy role (desirable).
