Description

Core Purpose

A Pega Application Engineer will provide departmental technical ability to staff through applications. They will be responsible for the full life cycle of applications including their integration with the wider technology infrastructure and have a key input into the strategic direction and the products that can be used to achieve that vision.

Summary

As an experienced Pega Application Engineer with advanced PEGA knowledge and coding skills, you will deal with the day to day management and development of application products and contribute towards their design. You will be responsible for the operational stability of the Application solutions, and be in a position to affect change in the on-going robustness and resilience of those products. You will collaborate with seniors and own Application Development Lifecycle Process as part of a delivery team focused on one or more products.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver quality software which is easy to maintain and clean to operate;
  • Implement best-practices to code securely and defensively;
  • Continue your learning and development of Application Engineering skills and assist in the training and mentoring of colleagues and peers by utilising pair-programming;
  • Build a robust automated test suite to support continuous integration;
  • Provide technical support on a specific application;
  • Use software to improve business performance;
  • Troubleshoot issues related to the application;
  • Identify and resolve technical issues related to the application;
  • Assist with systems integrations;
  • Maintain and update technical documents and processes;
  • Deliver application training to teams across DWP Digital;
  • Develop reports for teams across the business;
  • Facilitate communication of technical findings, models, and insights to different technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to Application Engineer colleagues and peers.

Technical Skills

Programming and Build (DDaT)

Collaborates with others when necessary to review specifications and uses these agreed standards and tools to design, code, test, correct and document programmes or scripts of medium to high complexity, using the right standards and tools. (Level 3)

Applications Support (DDaT)

Identifies and resolves issues with applications, following agreed procedures. Uses application management software and tools to collect agreed performance statistics. Carries out agreed applications maintenance tasks. (Level 3)

Technical Specialisms (DDaT)

Able to use management system software and tools. Has knowledge of logical schemata to investigate problems, collect performance statistics and create reports. Able to carry out routine configuration, installation and reconfiguration of database and related products. Optimises performance and forecasts resource needs. (Level 2)

User Centred Analysis (DDaT)

Able to use quantitative and qualitative data about users to turn user focus into outcomes. Delivers analysis and information that addresses stakeholder needs and provides recommendations. Collaborates with user researchers and other user-focused professions. Guides others on approaches to understand user stories. Identifies and engages with users/stakeholders to collate user needs evidence, and understands and defines research which fits user needs. (Level 2)

System Integration (DDaT)

Able to build and test simple interfaces, or can work on more complex integration as part of a wider team. (Level 2)

Service Focus (DDaT)

Takes inputs and establishes coherent frameworks that work. (Level 2)

Modern Standards Approach (DDaT)

Understands key principles of modern standards approach and how they apply to the work they are undertaking and will apply under guidance. (Level 2)

Systems Design (DDaT)

Translates logical designs into physical designs. Produces detailed designs and documents all work using required standards, methods and tools, including prototyping tools where appropriate. Designs systems characterised by managed levels of risk, manageable business and technical complexity and meaningful impact. Works with well-understood technology and identifies appropriate patterns. (Level 2)

Understanding Constraints (DDaT)

Can identify and understand constraints, and is able to communicate these and work within them. Is able to challenge the validity of constraints. Capable of ensuring standards are being met. (Level 2)

Methods and Tools (DDaT)

Can select and support the most appropriate tool or method. (Level 2)

Tools and Software (DDaT)

Able to use the most appropriate tools and software for a particular job. (Level 2)

Technical Breadth (DDaT)

Understands core technical concepts related to their role and is able to apply them. (Level 2)

IT Infrastructure (DDaT)

Builds, configures, administers and supports infrastructure technologies and solutions such as: compute, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open source packages and solutions, virtual and cloud including IaaS, PaaS, SaaS. (Level 2)

Essential Qualifications

  • Certified Senior System Architect (Pega)
  • Working experience on Pega 7.x and 8.x.

Working level Experience in:

  • PEGA engineering (Pega 7.x and 8.x) - Level 3
  • Configure PEGA application layers and components - Level 2
  • Deliver business process management solutions - Level 2
  • Monitor PEGA applications through AES - Level 2
  • Deliver software applications on cloud based environments
  • Java - Level 3
  • JavaScript - Level 3
  • Database (eg Oracle, Postgres SQL, etc.) - Level 3
  • Agile methodology (eg SCRUM, Kanban) - Level 2
  • Manage delivery and release processes in a CD environment

Key

  • Level 0 - No knowledge and experience.
  • Level 1 - Awareness: Has knowledge of the capability and an appreciation of how it's applied in the environment.
  • Level 2 - Working: Applies knowledge and experience of the capability, including tools and techniques, adopting those most appropriate for the environment.
  • Level 3 - Practitioner: Shares knowledge and experience of the capability with others including tools and techniques, defining those most appropriate for the environment.
  • Level 4 - Expert: Expert has knowledge and experience in application of this capacity, is a recognised specialist and advisor in this capability including user needs, generation of ideas, methods, tools and leading or guiding others in best practice use.
