Analyst/Modeller (data science)

Rate: £450 per day (in Scope)

Contract Length: 6 months

Location: Home based/Remote

IR35: Inside

Minimum Requirement: Propensity Score Matching

The postholder will be responsible for:

  • Building relationships with analytical, policy and operational experts to understand relevant data and variables related to pre-sentence reports and offender outcomes.
  • Conducting statistical analysis, including Propensity Score Matching, to analyse the impact of receiving, and type of, pre-sentence reports on offender outcomes.
  • Following Government Statistical Service guidance and good practice to produce a published, written report on results. This includes undergoing internal and external peer review of methodology and results.
  • Ensuring robust quality assurance of own analysis and supporting the quality assurance of analysis across the wider team in line with Aqua Book guidance.
  • Clearly communicating complex analysis to non-technical customers and senior leaders which includes following Government Statistical Service guidance and good practice to produce a published, written report on results, and undergoing internal and external peer review of methodology and results.
  • Contributing to the ongoing development of an R Shiny dashboard of management information related to probations and courts, including pre-sentence reports data.

The following experience and skills are essential:

  • Experience of conducting Propensity Score Matching, significance tests or related statistical analyses.
  • Experience of conducting statistical analysis using R or Python.
  • Experience of using quality assurance techniques to ensure robust analysis (ie to Aqua book standards).
  • The ability to present complex statistical analysis clearly, both verbally and in writing, to a non-technical audience. In particular communicating caveats and limitations of analysis.

The following experience and skills are desirable:

  • Use of R Shiny in dashboard development.
  • Experience of the criminal justice system.
  • An understanding of the Government Statistical Service Code of Practice, particularly in relation to publications.
