Data Architect

Overview:

This position will lead the strategic design, development and implementation of data models for complex, enterprise-level applications and systems. The Data Architect will be responsible for translating complex business requirements into tangible data requirements and associated conceptual and logical data models. This individual must be able to collaborate with business users and subject matter experts to gather and clarify requirements and effectively negotiate solutions. The position will provide expert consulting services in the identification and resolution of highly complex data and modelling related issues. The individual must possess an aptitude for gaining a thorough understanding of the business and actively applying it to individual work. The position must have the ability to articulate and translate technical language to non-technical customers and influence all levels across the company within their span of control.

Responsibilities:
1. Leads the design, development and implementation of complex, multi-application transactional and analytical data models at the conceptual and logical levels using standard data modelling tools
2. Translates complex business requirements into tangible data requirements through collaborative work with both business and technical subject matter experts
3. Develops models with an eye towards high performance, scalability, flexibility and usability
4. Ensures data models are in alignment with the overall Enterprise Information Management Architecture
5. Publishes and conducts model reviews and negotiations solutions with business and technical teams.
6. Analyzes and profiles large and complex data sets to discover and/or validate data quality issues and business rules.
7. Develops and documents functional specifications for data transformation based on business rules.
8. Ensures consistency of data definitions across areas of responsibility.
9. Assists with the translation of logical models to physical tables
10. Assists Business and IT associates with creation of complex queries.
11. Actively researches philosophical and technological changes in data management and pursues an understanding of the organization's business plans and strategies. Evaluates the value of these trends to the organization and presents the information to management and other team members.
12. Provides data modelling and other data-related consulting services to less experienced associates
13. Facilitates the development of data-related policies, processes, procedures and standards

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's Degree in IT related field or equivalent work experience.
2. 3+ years of relevant work experience with data in a large, complex online transaction processing or analytical environment
3. Demonstrated expert competence with normalized and dimensional data modelling techniques and the ability to effectively apply these techniques to complex business solutions 4. Demonstrated knowledge of Enterprise Information Management approaches, including data migration and integration strategies
5. Highly proficient in the use of data modelling tools
6. Good understanding of the software development life cycle (SDLC)
7. Experience utilizing advanced SQL query techniques for ad hoc queries, reports and complex data analysis
8. Aptitude for gaining deep knowledge of the industry and business, and proactively using this knowledge to deliver meaningful results
9. Ability to effectively and professionally communicate, both orally and in writing
10. Track record of consistently driving projects to completion and taking accountability for work and results. Confronts tough issues and situations
12. Demonstrates and promotes creativity and innovation. Proactively seeks out alternate solutions to business problems
13. Consults with clients and teammates to identify all facets of an issue and generate a solution. Understands potential impacts to processes and systems across organization and factors these into solutions. Excellent conceptualization, analytical and logic skills

Information Architect (Summarized):

  • Lead/co-own (with management) our information model across the organization (across and within all applications).
  • Responsible for understanding, designing, and documenting:
    o Information/Data Models (Logical and Physical - how the information is stored in our systems).
    o Information Integration (what information is integrated between systems and how).
    o Information Delivery (how this information flows into reporting and is then modeled for analytics).
    o Information Availability (what information is available to downstream systems and how).
  • Must be able to interface with all levels of the company:
    o High level strategic presentations for management and executives.
    o Semi-technical overviews for downstream consumers or business SMEs.
    o Detailed technical documentation or design/strategy for technicians.
  • Must have expertise in Data Modeling (Relational and Dimensional).
  • Must have experience leading Information Modeling across multiple groups, applications, technologies, etc. (ie not just a data modeler but understands how the data must be modeled in each application and then higher level model how that data is used throughout the organization).

Qualifications
Very good communication skills. Must have experience with SOA, ETL, BI, ERP, and Agile (or equivalent technology).
