Fixed Term Contract - 8 months Maternity Cover


Hours: Monday to Friday (9.00am - 5.30pm) plus participation in the shift/on-call rota


We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our client's busy Haematology & Blood Transfusion department to assist the section leader in the organisation and management of technical work of the department.


Key Responsibilities will include:

  • To carry out routine clinical Haematology / Blood Transfusion testing and to ensure high quality service throughout the sections.
  • To have the ability to perform all the routine technical procedures in use in the department.
  • To undertake all non-routine investigations when required and to take the necessary steps in dealing with technical operational problems which arise.
  • To ensure that any significant abnormal results encountered are checked and if necessary be brought to the attention of medical staff.
  • To understand uses and functions of the data processing systems.
  • To investigate and rectify analytical problems.
  • To keep the Team Leader, and/or Laboratory Manager, informed of any technical or personnel problems.
  • To remain aware of scientific or other advances relevant to work of the section.
  • To supervise and assist training junior members of staff.
  • To deputise for the Acting Chief BMS in Blood Transfusion when required.
  • Has contact with internal and external clients.
  • To assist in review and update of departmental operating procedures.
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the Team Leader.

Candidate Requirements:

  • HPC registered plus supervisory experience within Haematology/Blood Transfusion
  • Proven experience in routine and special Haematology essential
  • Experience in blood transfusion is essential
  • Previous experience within a busy 24 hour service laboratory
  • Ability and willingness to participate in out of hours roster
  • Strong troubleshooting ability
  • Ability to adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's)
  • Good team player with excellent interpersonal skills
