Description

Position Description:

Come work at one of the largest online news organizations in the world.  The Dow Jones Design Technology team is an indispensable part of producing amazingly high-value, high-demand, high-volume web applications which serve millions of people on a daily basis. Become an integral member of our team, whose backgrounds are as diverse as the rendering engines that we support. Create new executions, work with the design team to implement products designed ideally for the the farthest reaches of the web, and help development reach the exacting standards of the editorial eye for perfection.

Job Details:

  • Create, edit and update pages, templates, modules and tools with HTML and CSS and javascript for desktop, tablet and mobile sites.
  • Collaborate and consult with the various design, editorial, and technology teams.
  • Work with Design Tech and Development Teams to adhere to coding standards, and help further coding best practices across teams.

Position Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience of hardcore HTML/CSS development. Must enjoy arguing over the semantic definition of content, have an appreciation for the ideals of microformats, and an understanding of idealistic implementation vs authoring realities.
  • Be intimate with the theory of object-oriented CSS, as it applies to ridiculously large-scale, mixed-environment web ecosystems.
  • Appreciate javascript and its various popular frameworks.
  • Must enjoy tracking down esoteric bugs and understand conditional stylesheets, accept that deviating from validating CSS for the sake of achieving cross-browser, cross-platform design consistency is occasionally a necessary evil, and embrace inheritance.
  • Must embrace HTML and CSS validation, but accept that sometimes requirements dictate alternate approaches.
  • Ability to work at a pixel-level of perfection, but advocate the irrelevance of pixels as a measurement in a post-retina, post-responsive world.
  • Must love team-work.
  • Some years of PHP experience necessary, for use in prototyping different states of code, internal tools development and template modification.
  • Enjoy thinking about the recursion that results in modern MVC applications existing almost entirely in the V layer of a traditional MVC application.
  • Appreciate why require.js exists, and can interpret why this requirement matters to our organiztion.

This position requires working in NYC and legally being allowed to work in the US. Must be an individual to apply; companies and 3rd-party agencies are not eligible.
