University Relations & Communications at UWM is currently seeking a full-time project Web Designer/Developer in the Web Strategic Planning and Design Department. We’re looking for the best and brightest to join our passionate team of web designers and developers. You will interact with clients, manage projects, create concepts, strategize, design, develop and support projects with a big-picture, campus-wide impact at UWM. The expected duration of this project appointment is one (1) year. UWM serves approximately 30,000 students and 5,000 faculty and staff. We're located on a 93-acre campus in a residential neighborhood near the shores of Lake Michigan, just minutes from downtown Milwaukee. Visit the University Web site at uwm.edu.

Job Duties

The Web Designer/Developer will provide web and mobile application services on projects for University Relations & Communications and the UWM Campus. The incumbent will also participate in job-related classes; attend meetings and conferences; and maintain project tracking, and billing.

Specific duties include:

  • Designing and developing landing pages, microsites, promotional graphics, and web apps
  • Defining project needs, developing concepts, and presenting ideas
  • Mentoring colleagues and student employees
  • Keeping abreast of current web trends
  • Supporting, maintaining, and upgrading web apps and pages
  • Assisting with UWM’s Web Identity initiative to implement a unified, branded identity across UWM’s web presence.
  • Assisting with implementing a campus-wide Wordpress platform.
  • Assisting with other design, development, project management and operational tasks as needed.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Highly qualified candidates will possess the following abilities and/or knowledge:

  • Ability to serve as member of a design team, including collaboration on team projects and contributions to the team’s strategic direction.
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.
  • Extensive experience implementing web design concepts created in Adobe Photoshop.
  • Extensive experience facilitating and developing design concepts, storyboards and presentations, based on stakeholder requirements, marketing campaigns and University brand standards.
  • Working knowledge developing web sites in compliance with accessibility standards.
  • Extensive experience crafting clean, concise and compatible code, using web development best practices.
  • Expert knowledge of HTML,CSS, JavaScript and jQuery.
  • Expert knowledge of web and mobile browsers and platforms.
  • Knowledge of one or more enterprise web content management software packages, such as Drupal, WordPress, Joomla or CommonSpot.
  • Working knowledge of responsive design and creation of web sites for multiple target devices, including desktop/laptop, tablet and mobile/smartphone.
  • Experience with one or more server-side, interpreted scripting languages, such as PHP, .NET, Python or ColdFusion.
