Description

We are WhatRunsWhere - the leader in online advertising intelligence. We collect and create insights from a myriad of data to help businesses buy ads more effectively. We operate as a small yet passionate team that feels like a family. We love new ideas and encourage and reward creative, forward thinking.

As a developer at WhatRunsWhere, you will be primarily responsible for developing the customer-facing product and other internal company tools. We are a small team so you'll get to do a bit of everything: working on HTML/CSS and Javascript on the frontend, developing new features into our product on the backend, updating and improving our API, or optimizing our distributed crawler system. For a company of our size, we've got a lot of data, a lot of servers, and a lot of challenging problems to tackle and we're looking for energetic and motivated people to join our remote team.

Many of our systems are PHP-based, but almost all new development is being done in Python. We're looking for developers with solid Python experience (understanding of Python packaging, internals, best practices) but the ability to work with our legacy PHP codebase will also be essential. The ideal candidate will have multiple Python web applications under their belt, strong opinions about code quality and style, and an insatiable appetite for learning new languages and tools.

Requirements
  • Experience making strategic, incremental improvements to legacy codebases
  • Significant experience in Python, PHP, or similar language
  • Demonstrable experience with a prominent web development framework (Rails, Django, Kohana, etc.)
  • Substantial experience with MySQL or similar relational database
  • Thorough understanding of Linux, networking, and HTTP fundamentals
  • Substantial preference will be given to candidates who can provide samples of previous work

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with PHP would be useful but not required
  • Experience collaborating via GitHub (branching strategies, pull request code reviews)
  • Experience with non-relational datastores (Hadoop, Riak, etc.)
  • Interest in machine learning

  • Please send resume and optional cover letter. Feel free to ask us any questions!
