Description

Our client is a world-leading developer and manufacturer of piezoelectric drop-on-demand inkjet technologies and printheads, is looking to extend its mechanical design capability in the area of Fluid Path Engineering. Specifically, the purpose of this role is to provide technical leadership in the area of mechanical design and generation of innovative robust solutions for the fluid functional systems in Xaar's next generation thin-film piezo printhead products.

As a Principle Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for:

- Technical leadership of mechanical design activities from architecture and concept definition through to detailed modelling, design and validation, specifically in the areas of fluid path components and systems and inkjet print heads.

- Thorough understanding of product requirements, system architecture, design of fluid path components, interfaces, assemblies and systems.

- Generation of innovative and functional design concepts, detailed design specifications for fluid subsystems and components.

- Design of mechanical elements of the product using Solidworks.

- Leading the selection of materials and manufacturing methods.

- Optimisation of design trade-offs and creation of solutions for:

" Functionality and performance in the specified applications;
" Fluidic, thermal and electrical integration;
" Robustness, reliability and durability;
" Manufacturability, testability and yielded unit cost;
" Ease of integration in end-use systems;
" Installability, usability, maintainability and serviceability

- Preparation of, and participation in, design reviews (including FMEAs).

- Timely release of complete design information for prototype manufacture.

- Deliver high quality design documentation and reports.

- Work with test and development engineers in design verification and validation testing.

- Work in partnership with suppliers to ensure that components and assemblies can be manufactured to the dimensions and tolerances required.

- Ensure proper DFX has been considered.

- Ensure compliance with internal standards for design validation. Work with manufacturing on the introduction of new products in the factory.

- Work with programme management to ensure that mechanical parts of the design are delivered on time.

- Coach, mentor and assist group members to deliver the highest standards of work.

Key Challenges:

- Understanding the complex design requirements and operating environment of the print heads and their application;
- Understanding cross-functional interaction between mechanical parts, electronics, and fluids;
- Meeting project deadlines without compromising design quality;
- Create innovative fluids systems design solutions.

Person Specification:

- Possess excellent analytical and problem solving abilities;
- Be confident leader, able to provide excellent guidance to other engineers and technicians;
- Have excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Be detail and quality conscious with a sharp focus on schedule and delivery;
- Have a methodical and systematic approach to work and project management;
- Be a proactive and effective multi-tasker;
- Have excellent interpersonal and cross-functional team working skills;
- Captures and details work by way of written and verbal communication;
- Be a team player with the ability to negotiate and influence individuals and project teams.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:

Qualifications

- BSc in Mechanical engineering;
- MSc or PhD in Mechanical engineering is desirable.

Knowledge and Skills

- Fundamentals of mechanical engineering, including tolerance, stress and thermal analysis;
- Design and tooling of mechanical components to be manufactured using techniques such as injection moulding, metal casting, extrusion and machining;
- Design and process FMEA;
- Modern materials and associated manufacturing methods;
- Design for thermal management of subsystems and components;
- Mechanical modelling and design tools.

Essential experience

Substantial year experience in:

- Design of products involving moving parts, custom mechanical components, fluid paths and electronic subsystems;
- Successful delivery of the accountabilities described above;
- Fabrication methods for both rapid prototyping and mass production.
- 3D CAD

Desirable
