Senior Software Engineer / Architect - AndroidMy client is a leading designer and manufacturer of innovative, high-end, interactive learning & development tools and have recently moved to a new State of the Art facility in Lancashire. They are embarking on an exciting project to design and build a new flagship product that will further establish the company in the market.
They have an urgent requirement for an experienced Senior Software Engineer / Architect to design and develop the complete Android software platform for their new product.
Responsibilities
- To lead the design and development of the complete Android software platform for a new Android device.

The role includes assisting in the specification of the new device, tailoring the vanilla Android OS to the specific device hardware platform, and developing hardware drivers, services, libraries etc in both the Android kernel and user space, to provide Android App developers with access to the available hardware features. - Tailor the vanilla Android OS to a new and specific device with relevant h/w binaries for the chipsets in the device.
- Modify the Android Linux kernel as required, including developing kernel mode drivers for new h/w components.
Modify the default Android User Interface to ensure it is appropriate for large vertical interactive surfaces. - Ensure that the device will meet the Android Device Compatibility requirements.
- Develop Testing tools that support automatic regression tests.
- Develop the necessary infrastructure in Promethean to support an Android device including update mechanisms etc.
- Develop and operate the necessary tools and systems to maintain this device for its complete lifetime - Continuous Integration (CI) systems
Skills/Requirements
- Significant experience in software development, and the complete software development life cycle.
- Must have experience in tailoring the Android OS for a specific device, developing in or for the Android Linux kernel, and in modifying the Android UI.
- Must be able to demonstrate this experience in an interview. May be asked to create something for demonstration at interview
