Description

The Canadian Art Foundation, publisher of Canadian Art magazine, is seeking a freelance/contractor Magazine Production Manager to work with the team in its Toronto office. This position reports to the Publisher. Canadian Art is the country’s leading visual-arts media brand—an award-winning, prestigious multi-platform showcase for contemporary art.  

Responsibilities

  • Liaise between Canadian Art and freelance colour specialist (i.e., summarize comments from Art Director, upload/retrieve files on shared FTP, troubleshoot colour issues)
  • Generate randoms (colour image proofs) for each image in each issue using an in-house colour workstation and Epson printer
  • Work closely with Sales Director to develop and maintain quarterly advertising sales sheet and track ad material deadlines; communicate printing specifications and procedures to advertisers; troubleshoot ad printing and production issues
  • Track advertising material and positioning requests; create ad layout pages in InDesign
  • Coordinate with the Copy Editor, Managing Editor, Editor and Art Director to track and implement all editorial and/or colour corrections
  • Create “dummy book” to review placement of ad material
  • Paginate magazine for final output
  • Organize all InDesign files and retouched colour images; coordinate with editorial staff to review/approve page proofs
  • Prepare and track pre-flight PDFs and ensure they meet printing specifications; re-link all colour-approved high-resolution editorial images
  • Confirm pre-flight and upload all editorial and advertising PDFs to printer FTP site
  • Coordinate incorporation of all circulation materials with Circulation Manager
  • Liaise with the printer to confirm press run and press check; travel to attend and oversee press checks at printer handled by editorial team as an interim measure/responsibility
  • Liaise with Publisher, Sales Director, editorial staff, printer, subscription fulfilment house and distributors for scheduling and planning of magazine production and delivery
  • Send out bulk-sales emails; generate office/complimentary copy press run
  • Archive all final advertising and editorial files
  Qualifications & Skills
  • 5+ years experience in production and graphic design
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Acrobat and Photoshop
  • Enthusiastic team player with excellent communication skills
  • Able to multitask under pressure
  • Highly organized with a sharp eye for detail and knowledge of design fundamentals
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to set and meet deadlines
  • Familiarity with offset and/or sheet-fed printing
  • Interest in and knowledge of contemporary art a bonus
