25+ years in search and information retrieval before RAG had a name: Library Science background, Lucene, Solr/SolrCloud, Elasticsearch, Mahout: query analysis, relevance tuning, text classification and large-scale indexing across e- commerce, media and telemetry data. Author of Enterprise Lucene and Solr (Addison-Wesley, 2017) on productionising retrieval systems. Three years building RAG on top of that foundation: embedding and chunking design, vector storage (LanceDB), retrieval tuning and evaluation harnesses.
I take a production-grade approach to RAG-based information retrieval systems. Evaluation harnesses are an essential part of my designs, not just for the initial data load, but also on a continuing basis as the corpus grows and other parameters change. I treat these systems as production systems - observability, failure handling, deployment, performance and reliability - not simply API servers connected to a vector database.
I specialize in understanding why systems fail, and how to prevent that. Whether the builder is human or agent, the causes are the same in both cases: lightweight or sloppy specifications, abstract architectures, unhandled failure modes.
30 years delivering production systems at scale, series A startups to Fortune 500 clients: payments and banking compliance (VocaLink/Mastercard, Custodia), telco and enterprise platforms (Swisscom, HERE Technologies), media and consumer (Blinkbox, MyTheresa, Starz Entertainment). Regulated & secure environment delivery experience: SEPA and BACS payment infrastructure, ISO 27001, SOC2, PCI-compliance. Solid experience with global, high-volume systems (HERE, Swisscom, Starz).
