I specialise in:

1. Requirements gathering and analysis - problem modelling and determining what systems need to do.

2. System integration - making sure things work when you connect them together.

3. Gap analysis - finding holes and architecting solutions in the ways systems and businesses operate.

4. System verification and validation - testing that systems work the way they were designed.

5. Data research and compilation - putting together technical documentation.

6. Developing training material - teaching others what I have learnt.

7. Collaboration - planning with multi-disciplinary teams to bring ideas and operations together.

8. Software testing - making sure software or websites work the way they should.

The MeerKAT array, constructed in South Africa's Karoo region, is a world-class radio telescope. It is currently the most sensitive instrument in its frequency band in the world, designed to do ground-breaking science. I was the Chief Systems Engineer for the project from its inception until commissioning started in 2016 (I then moved on to the SKA project). The project was very successful in achieving a sensitivity of two times the specified value, which enables some of the science to be performed 4 times as quickly as initially planned. The project was also considered successful from a reliability and availability perspective, with the system being science-productive immediately after its launch in 2018.

The MeerKAT array consists of 64 13.5m dishes. Each dish has two cryogenically cooled receivers, digitisers and cryogenic support equipment. The system was built in a remote farming location and all infrastructure had to be established on site, including roads, power reticulation and fibre networks. The site features a bespoke high performance comuputing facility that processes the data coming in from the dishes at a few Tbps speed. The data is processed on site by a Correlator/Beamformer system and a Science Data Processor. The site also features high accuracy time and frequency distribution network and data networks.
