Laboratory Director

Mercedes
Species (FuEDEI; 2012-2014) (www.fuedei.org). The USDA-ARS-SABCL was replaced by FuEDEI on 1 OCT
2012.

Worked occasionally on agricultural administration (wheat, coriander, corn, sunflower, soybeans)

After retirement (Dec 2019) worked as a small farmer (Coriander and alfalfa) in Mercedes, Buenos
Aires Province, Argentina.

Participation in research projects at USDA
Malezas: Snakeweed (Gutierrezia spp.), Baccharis spp., Cina-Cina (Parkinsonia aculeata).
Insects: Dung beetles, fire ants (Solenopsis invicta and S. richteri), prickly pear moth (Cactoblastis
cactorum) and small fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata).

Significant achievements
He conducted pioneering studies of the microsporidium Kneallhazia solenopsae in fire ants from
Argentina. The results produced great interest in the biological control of these ants in the United
States and other countries.

He discovered populations of the ant Solenopsis invicta highly infected simultaneously with two
microsporidia: Kneallhazia solenopsae and Vairimorpha invictae. The discovery favored the
implementation of biological control of fire ants.

He collaborated in the survey, collection and shipment of parasitoid flies, Pseudacteon spp. from
Argentina. This contributed to the release of several of these agents for fire ants control in the
US.

Author or co-author of 50 articles in international scientific journals and book chapters; 17
presentations at scientific meetings in Argentina and 43 presentations at international congresses
in the US, UK, France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, India, Brazil and Venezuela.

Received 7 Certificates of Merit from the USDA for dedication to service and outstanding
contributions to science in maintaining the high quality of research at USDA-ARS-SABCL.
