Description
Role: AS400 Engineer / Manager
Location: Veghel, Netherlands
Work Mode: Hybrid mode (2 to 3days on-site per week, willing to visit client’s office in Amsterdam once in a quarter on need basis.
Hiring Type: Freelance / B2B
Duration: 6 Months initially

Job Description:
Key responsibilities:
As a senior engineer, it is expected to guide and mentor other engineers in the team and sometimes takes the position of Team Lead as necessary
- Delivery KPIs – ITSM KPIs like SLA, MTTR, Escalations, incidents reduction etc
- DevSecOps KPIs – DORA metrics, change deployment rate
Must Have Skills/Knowledge:
AS400 / IBM i Technical Skills
Strong experience with:
• RPG III / RPG IV / RPG ILE / RPG Free Format
• AS400 Lansa
• CLP programming
• DB2/400 (DB400) and embedded SQL
Understanding of:
• AS400 job processing, batch jobs, and scheduling
• File systems, data structures, and database design
• Integration & Application Understanding
• Experience with legacy ERP systems and custom-built applications
Knowledge of:
• Interfaces between AS400 and other systems (SAP, POS, logistics systems)
• Ability to analyse data flows, APIs, and integration dependencies
• Incident & Production Support
Hands-on experience in:
• Incident triaging and resolution
• Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
• ITSM tools and ticketing workflows
Good to Have Skills / Knowledge:
Automation & AI Enablement
Exposure to:
• Automation tools for repetitive support activities
• Knowledge graph / documentation tools
• AI-assisted troubleshooting or reverse engineering
• Modernization Awareness
Understanding of:
• SAP S/4HANA migration programs
• Legacy system decommissioning strategies
• Exposure to coexistence scenarios (AS400 ? SAP transition)
• DevOps & Observability
Basic understanding of:
• Monitoring tools, logging, and observability
• CI/CD and release management concepts
Soft skills:
Problem Solving in Ambiguous Environments
Ability to work with:
• Low documentation (~85% systems have limited documentation)
• Complex legacy systems and unclear dependencies
• Collaboration & Stakeholder Management
Work effectively with:
• Business SMEs
• SAP teams and vendors
• Multi-vendor ecosystem (high fragmentation)
• Learning Agility
• Ability to quickly ramp up on undocumented legacy applications
• Comfortable with reverse engineering and knowledge discovery
• Ownership & Reliability Mindset
Strong focus on:
• Business continuity (“stability first”)
• Zero disruption during transition and operations
Preferred Experience Range:
• 8–15 years in IT support / application support roles
• 6+ years in AS400 / IBM i environments
• Experience in retail, supply chain, or ERP-driven organizations preferred
• Exposure to large-scale transformation programs (SAP or legacy modernization) is highly desirable
