KONG API Gateway Specialist - SAP Integration
The project is an exciting and complex software implementation project for an international enterprise in the energy sector (Turbines and other power plant equipment). The goal of the project is to build a supplier portal for logistical processes in the area of traceability, procurement and logistics.
The project’s technical foundation is a SAP S/4HANA backend combined with SAP Fiori/UI5 frontend technology, integrated with multiple databases, legacy systems. SAP Ariba knowledge is plus but not required.
Role Overview:
As our KONG expert, you will design and operate the API gateway layer that exposes and protects SAP-based services. You'll bridge the SAP world and cloud-native API management, making sure internal teams, customers and market partners can access SAP data and processes securely, performantly and in a standardized way. You will work closely with a strong technical team of Business Analysts/Consultants, SAP Fiori Developers, SAP ABAP Developers and SnapLogic Developers in a remote environment via slack and regular standups.
- Project Duration: roughly 6 month
- Project Location: remote (occasional workshops in Berlin possible) Europe preferred.
- Project Setup: Agile software development with international stakeholders and implementation team (including USA, Germany, Spain, Poland)
- Technical Aspects: Backend Development mostly in ABAP, Frontend mostly in SAP Fiori, Multiple SAP Systems, Microsoft Azure identity management. Cloud and on premise environment.
What You'll Do
- Design, implement and operate KONG Gateway (Enterprise and/or OSS) and KONG Konnect as the central API layer in front of SAP S/4HANA, SAP IS-U / S/4HANA Utilities and SAP BTP services
- Expose and secure SAP interfaces (OData, SOAP, REST, RFC/BAPI via middleware) through KONG, including authentication, rate limiting, transformation and caching
- Integrate KONG with SAP Integration Suite (Cloud Integration/CPI, API Management, Event Mesh) and/or SAP PI/PO, and define clear responsibilities between the layers
- Implement identity and security concepts across SAP and non-SAP systems: OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, mTLS, principal propagation, SAP Identity Authentication Service (IAS) / IPS
- Develop custom KONG plugins (Lua, Go or JavaScript PDK), e.g. for SAP-specific headers, CSRF token handling or payload transformation
- Operate KONG on Kubernetes with the KONG Ingress Controller and manage configuration declaratively using decK, Terraform and GitOps
- Build CI/CD pipelines for API configuration and plugin delivery
- Set up monitoring, logging and alerting (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, SAP Cloud ALM or similar)
- Support energy-specific integration scenarios such as market communication (MaKo, EDIFACT, BDEW API web services), smart meter gateway data, billing and customer portals
- Ensure compliance with requirements for critical infrastructure (NIS2, KRITIS, ISO 27001, BSI IT-Grundschutz) at the API layer
- Work closely with SAP developers, basis teams and architects, and coach teams on API-first design (OpenAPI/AsyncAPI)
- Contribute actively to sprint planning, refinements, reviews and retrospectives in a Scrum/Kanban/SAFe setup
What You Bring
Must have
- 3–5+ years of experience in integration, platform engineering or software development
- Proven hands-on experience operating KONG Gateway in production
- Solid experience integrating SAP systems via APIs: OData, SOAP, IDoc, RFC/BAPI including Principle Propagation concept
- Hands-on experience with SAP Integration Suite (CPI / API Management) or SAP PI/PO
- Strong understanding of API security and identity standards (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, mTLS)
- Git-based workflows and CI/CD (GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps or similar)
- Experience working in agile teams
- Very good English
Nice to have
- Experience with SAP BTP (Cloud Foundry), SAP Event Mesh or Advanced Event Mesh
- Custom KONG plugin development in Lua or Go
- Certifications such as KONG Certified Associate, SAP Certified Integration Developer, CKA/CKAD
